Update on how this hunt went.... it turns out this whole ‘holler’ is full of 4 year old saplings, and then a variety of mature hardwoods scattered throughout... it’s a pretty place to hunt because once you’re up the tree you can see a lot, but it’s hard to find a tree that you don’t stick out, and deer movement is fairly concealed by the new growth. The thicket also severely constrains what can be accessed, it’s a wall of saplings you can’t pass through. the woods open up near the desirable elevations at the lower end of the boot shaped ridge, but I found a climber, mock scrape, and trail cam down there so I didn’t hunt that end. A few of us basically picked the best clearings we could find and hunted em - plans kind of went out the window, the thicket decided where we could hunt, and major wind / thermal compromises were made. A few mornings I scouted several other areas but sign was minimal, so I hunted this area exclusively. I only saw a few doe with no shots offered, but my buddy several hundred yards away arrowed this nice 140” ten point. Listening to stories around the campfire, other guys were hunting other areas, it was really hard to describe any rhyme or reason, or terrain, that defined deer sightings, other than to be in clearings or along the edge of the thickets, which were timbered four years ago. By yesterday, a few bucks were seen chasing does. Slowly but surely we’re finding spots to hunt in future years, and this was the first good buck we’ve hung at camp from this area in several years of trying.
