API Stick Mods

I'm just about done with the mods to my API sticks. I've shorten them to 20" between steps, added a rope mod (last year), and made the top step a platform.

The platform is a 3x3x1/4 square tube aluminum. I just cut it down and drilled holes. The stick was done with 3/8 holes 1 inch on center. Counter sunk with a 1/2" countersink. Have an extension to this system made from tubular webbing from rei. Got to weigh them and fix a loop to attach to the saddle.

Prob about 2.25 or so. I like my APIs. LW standoffs will save a few more oz. they are 2.5ea. Instead of 4 if you are worried about it, not really worth the money but I did it cuz I’m dumb like that, lol. Mine with1/2 holes, 3/4 countersink, LW standoffs, daisy chains and a 2 oz aider are 2lb 1.7 oz. just under 2 lb with just stick and daisy. Mine are 24 with 22 step. Enjoy

Do you mind sharing how the LW standoffs compare to the API/Muddy’s... I’ve got Muddy’s and API’s and they bite the tree well and rotate a bit to adjust to tree unevenness... Do the Lone Wolf’s bite as well, do they stack, and they stand off from the tree as far as the API’s?

I’m trying to decide what to do with mine. Go LW, or DanO DoubleStep Standoffs. He makes some that rotate, which could act similar to the API’s when setting the stick on the tree, but not sure how well they stack. Sorry for being long-winded. Just hoping to get your thoughts on the LW standoffs

That's cool brother. I just wanted to loose my ROS and lighten up my system. Over all I lost something like 6 pounds. My ROS alone was close to 5 pounds. I only saved 2 pounds from the stick mod.

They rotate, and will rotate as much as needed because there’s no tabs to stop them. Stack well and a little lighter. I think they stand off the tree a hair more but not certain and I don’t have an API stand-off anymore to compare.

Thank you very much for the info. Looks like I’m gonna have to put out a WTB for a couple to check out

Sweet platform. Where did you buy your material to make it? Do you have a link? How did you cut it?

I got my materials at Metals Supermarket. I cruise the drops bins pretty regularly. The way I cut it was with my table saw, miter saw, drill press, grinder and flap wheel, countersink.

Don't get freaked out because it's aluminium. You don't have to buy special blades for it. Aluminium isn't any harder than most hardwoods. When you cut be sure to wear your PPE and cut slow.

1. Measure length. Mine is 9.5" long.
2. Mark sides that are not part of piece.
3. Set table saw at 2.75" - 1/32 to the outside of the blade. Should leave you with a lip to sand off. This goes against the post and will have to be drilled.
4. Set table saw at a 1/2" rotate and flip the piece to cut out the other part of the drop.
5. Mark in from edges at the heel 1/4 - 1/2 ".
6. Find center of the piece
7. Off set the 1/2 inch on both sides of the center line.
8. Connect the points you just created in step 5 and 7. This should give you around a 60 to 70 degree line. Then offset that line by 3/4".
9. I drilled holes in the corners of the triangle created by the layout of the gussets and cut out the middle.
10. Attach to stick.

The aluminium i bought was a 3"x3"×1/4" square structural tube. Spent 15 in materials, got caught up in design but 3 days of layout. 10 minutes after I got out of my own head. The platform in all took me about an hour to make. With the 20" stick mods and paint a day. I got my grass cut and a few errands done in the process.

If you have any questions just hit me up.

This is the drops from the project. Table saw cuts cleaner than miter saw. Not much to clean. Sorry for the mangled foot in the picture.
