What is a good atc option for new one-sticker? Do I need one with assisted brake? One that I see often in videos is a black diamond but its specs are 8.1mm rope and above and I have 8mm. Appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

i current have the black diamond ATC-XP and really like it. anything beyond a basic atc or figure 8 and you might as well fork over the money for a gri gri or safeguard...i actually dont put it on the line until im about to repel though... im clipped into a prussic... when im done hunting, i put the atc above my prussic, run my rope, unclip from the prussic to the atc, then clip the prussic to a biner on my hip as an autoblock... i really dont like climbing with metal on the line.. i just dont want it clanging into my step when i step up and create slack...

This will be my third season rappelling, regardless my climbing method. I bought a black diamond ATC (double) because I have a long rope going over the crotch in the tree or that big branch above and rappel on a double rope. It makes retrieving the rope so much easier. As a backup, I have a rescue 8 in my bag.
Here the reasoning: I can use a double ATC on a single rope, but not the other way around! There is no rope spec required for an ATC, any size rope in my possession will work. I put an autostop below the ATC as backup and to let me remove the platform on my way down. Again, there is no spec for the rope as long it’s in the ratio. Using a double rope, nearly any size of rope will work with the autoblock. The same goes for the rescue 8. Any size of rope will work. Play around with different methods and go with the one you feel most comfortable and safe. Use the information from this side and find your way. Stay safe!

The grivel master mono is what I have and was going to recommend. I climb just like TooheyBirdie mentioned above.
…haha… i saw that on his site right after I bought my belay device at my climbing gym… oh well… and I thought I had the act xp… I have the Wild Country Pro Guide Lite… which is for from 11mm to 7.7mm…

The mono works well. The black diamond figure 8 will leave your rope twisted. I just don't like climbing and hunting off the madrock safeguard.
