Backup for atc guide

Does anyone run a backup above their atc guide and clip into the metal hoop on it? I normally have a prusik onto linemans loop but was reading in the forum yesterday that may not be the best option. Looking for other options and while in the tree today I thought to clip my carabiner that attaches to my bridge into the hoop on the atc after I clipped into the atc. Still had the backup on my linemans loop but wondering if this could work or if anyone sees anything wrong with it.20210816_171646.jpg20210816_171650.jpg20210816_171646.jpg20210816_171650.jpg

I prefer the friction hitch above the belay tube, just have to train yourself to release the hand on the hitch if your brake hand comes off the rope. But it looks like the way you have it set up, the keeper cable would be seeing all your weight, if you let go of the rope. The cables are not strong enough for life support, just saw Ryan Jenkins test them, only about 5kN of strength.

Keeper cable meaning the hitch above?

The plastic coated cable that is on the ATC, only epoxied in, letting rope go would put your weight on that cable, as shown.

Ahh. Didnt know that was the term for that piece. I'm not sure I'm tracking ya on how my weight would or could get transfered to the keeper cable? Do you use a guide atc? If so could you post a picture of your setup so I can see what ya got going on?

The ATC doesn’t lock down on the rope unless you’re holding the rope, if you let go the rope slides through. Below left is how it would look if the rope was removed from the ATC, essentially the same as letting go of the rope. The ATC just below the hitch is nice and compact and it acts as a hitch tender.

I gotcha now. Do you run one below as well or just the hitch above?

There a reason you don't run one above?
The Petzl I use it’s not needed. One below and that’s it. I simply pinch the hitch and I safety and simply go down the tree

JCLINE has a great video of how he does it on his YouTube channel.

I only use one hitch at a time, I like it above so that my brake hand only has to deal with grabbing the rope , not work a hitch also. I tie a SGB II belay tube on my harness leg loop, only need to feed a bight of rope in and over the peg and pull out slack

Makes sense. I did realize working two hitches was a bit of a pain. The hitch above probably makes it easier to stop and grab steps or platform off tree I'd imagine also

I'm setting up my rappell rig with the hitch above the device for the reason Brocky mentioned and having the hitch at eye level so I can see it's dressed properly and working correctly. Hitch on top will give both hands one job instead of one hand doing two.
