Anyone have any background on why saddles have both a belt and suspenders? Are there advantages to having one, the other, or both?

Most dont have suspenders. The ones that do are for old folks that wear black knit socks with sandals when they go to walmarks. :p
Come on man. I shop at Costco. Not Walmart.

Pretty sure the belt is to keep is positioned for safety. The suspenders are for guys like me with no curvature on their rear ends to stop it from sliding down. Expecially when you add a dump pouch hanging off the back.

What MattMan81 said. The belt is part of the safety aspect of the saddle, keeping it in position, and honestly part of keeping you in it. The suspenders are pretty much to keep it from sagging. I’m a bigger guy and if I don’t have suspenders I’m constantly fighting to keep it up on the walk in. I added a pair of cheap amazon suspenders last year and it made a huge difference.

You have to have a belt so that you don't fall out of the thing. The suspenders are for folks that like to walk in with their saddles (often with stuff attached to them) and the suspenders keep the saddle from falling down.

I didn’t have much issue with saddle sag last year (6’2-3” and 205 for reference) but I added a couple dump pouches this year and was worried about weight in them causing an issue so I picked up a set of suspenders to try out. Early testing says I’m going to be really happy I got them. Eliminated the minor sag I had and adjusting when walking in and out. Really comfortable. Thinking those old boys are on to somethin, they usually are though.

What saddles have suspenders? Or am I missing something here
The new Tethrd Lockdown comes with the suspenders. Other companies offer them as add ones, such as CGM. Still not the norm for saddle hunters to use suspenders but you are see more of them using them.

Just added suspenders a week ago. Should have done it last year. Michigan Octobers can get hot. Backpack sucked. Now I won't have to use one in warm weather.

the tethrd suspenders attach great if your saddle has tight molle loops. I have used these to attach suspenders to other saddles like the method I. I cut off the plastic D-Loop and attaché the suspender hooks in that spot. These also work great to lock down any of the tri-glide saddle pouches to a saddle with loose molle.
