Best camera to start self filming with

I went on eBay and bought a used vixia cam, best cheap mic off Amazon and spare battery and muddy camera arm(great but big and heavy). Probably $250+ - in all

It takes alot of dedication to self film. I only film every few times and when I don't is always when I shoot my bucks lol

Another good resource for this thread is Catman outdoors on YouTube. He has several vids on getting into the self filming game at an entry level, as well as a bunch of tips and tricks.

If you‘re looking for a canon camera/camcorder check out the refurbished cams on the canon website. Usually a third of the price of a new one and still have a one year warranty. I’m running a canon power shot sx530 and muddy camera arm and a GoPro that clips on my tether. The Canon doesn’t have an external mic and internal mic is just ok. Takes great pics and video. The muddy arm is a not bad. Fluid head is not super smooth but for my use it works fine. To lighten it up I left the post off it and tried a lighter strap. Lighter strap didn’t tighten the arm down enough to keep it from moving on me when the arm was extended with the camera on it so I went back to the factory strap. I already had the GoPro and the rest of the setup cost me $170. Pretty cheap setup to get into filming.

What are you filming for? To just see yourself hunt, or to share with others or online?

If you have a newer smartphone I’d start with that and not buy anything. Learn how to film and practice getting good shots. So many get a camera to just film themselves when they never focus on getting better at filming. The camera will never make you better at filming as experience and learning how to film will. YouTube cinema camera vs canon eos ($30k camera vs a $500 camera) and they give the cinema camera to a newbie and the cheap camera to a pro. You can guess how the end product turned out...

If you are trying to share videos with others, then try to get at a minimum a clip on mic. Audio will make or break any good video.

if just for yourself, realize your going to add a lot of weight and potential for unnatural noise setting up. With an iPhone and a cheap bendable tripod you can do a lot of stuff without dropping a lot of money.

Anything with at least 4k capabilities.

Micro 4/3rds cameras work really well for shooting HD and can be had pretty cheap. I use cameras professionally and have a Mixture of DSLR of the cannon type, and some of the Olympus Micro 4/3 cameras. I have been really impressed with the Low light capabilities of the Micro 4/3. Just keep in mind filming takes a lot more then Just buying the camera. You need to understand about film rates and exposure rates, ISO, lens speed, 180 rule.

One of my Professional drones has a Micro 4/3 4k Video camera with interchangable lenses. I picked up the olympus so I would have a camera with the same lenses as my drone. I have been amazed at the quality from such a small package.

Don't let that discoruage you. Some of the best video editing software on the planet is free. I use Davinci Resolve here.

Its a lot of work, one of the reasons I have not really wanted to film my hunts. Go Pro will not give you a prefessional quality with the wide angle lens but is a must for inclament weather filming and getting wide angle shots. I have a lot of respect for guys self filming and taking great bucks.
