one possible cheap option would be one of those river tubes with some kind of net bottom tied in and just drag it behind ya.

Mine has a 550lb capacity and is very stable, just not sure how to haul a kill. My goal for next year is to access an area by yak and kill one from the saddle. We have a really nice lake about 40 minutes from here where I can access public ground from the water.

I've been pondering the same issue. I was thinking about strapping my jet sled to the back of the yak to bring it in, and then towing it out with the deer. I could line it with pool noodles for added buoyancy. It's an idea I'd have to practice before I tried it on a deer for sure.

Or even a cheap raft would probably work. Another question....how are you guys securing your boats on the shore to prevent theft? The lake I want to hunt is fairly busy and while I think I can hide my yak pretty good I still worry about someone taking it and leaving me stranded lol. I was thinking a long cable lock through the scupper hole and around a tree would work. Already cyber-scouting several locations to look at next spring!

I use a bicycle cable lock when worried about theft. I try to hide canoe well, not necessarily due to theft but, so that someone doesn't call it in worried that someone has drown. Not fun coming out of the woods only to be greeted by sheriff boat, dnr boat and a rescue dept boat. Trust me, no fun at all!

You guys trying to tow the deer behind yak or canoe with raft or tube. Keep in mind what a struggle it will be with wind or current. A mild river current will get you TROUBLE fast and stiff wind will cause many curse words to flow from mouth and sore muscles in the a.m. .

Yep. Had some explaining to do but no trouble. Sure had me Second Guessing whether I was legal or doing something unknowingly illegal. LoL
 
I use a cable to lock my yak to the roof of my truck if I'm leaving it on for any period of time. You could do the same to a tree. I run it through a scupper hole.
 
Bicycle lock for me as well. But the places I'm hunting are rarely visited by others. You can't get a motor boat in the creek and the vast majority aren't willing to lug a canoe or kayak around.

In that situation it's probably pretty safe. This WMA is a hot spot for bass fishing so it has a good bit of boat traffic until the weather gets cold. Banks are pretty steep in areas so not sure how well I can hide the yak. Just gonna take some exploring this spring to find spots I can get without much pressure.

I haven't locked mine up while hunting. I think the only people that I could feasibly bump into would be duck hunters or other deer hunters. But it's not very likely. I have locked it up in the truck when leaving it unattended for a few minutes.

Of course the way I hunt the rivers, I can usually see it from my tree. I think a warning shot over the bow of a would be thief would do the trick. I don't like to venture in more than 50 yards from the bank. For me, the whole purpose of accessing ground via boat is to not spook the deer by walking through the woods.
 
I'm gonna have to figure out how to exit a canoe onto a steep bank... the one I'll be borrowing for scouting/hunting is a standard sit in style.

Cable lock to a tree is the way to go.

Same here, I have about 50-60yds walk in, and its pretty quiet.

I've been thinking about quartering and packing out from some way back places. This might be a good option for packing out in a yak also?

175lb deer and 175lb me in a 12' round bottom pirogue. She'll float it but mind your weight distribution and don't lean lol.
 
13 or 15.4 Gheenoes are very stable , you can stand on the gunnel and boat will not slide out from under you like a canoe. They will carry two or three people and gear. you can haul a couple pigs or deer, paddles easy like canoe or can handle a ten horse( some put fifteens on them)fits in the bed of truck or cartopable weighs 120# .Great for polling . I have a 3.5 or an eight horse on mine and trolling motor on the bow depending on what I'm doing
