Boat Camera Arm/Fluid Head Idea

Where the skys are so blue!
Thinking about how to film mine and my wife's fishing trips. Mainly for us, since we probably can't stay young and irresponsible in our fish shack on the swamp forever. But maybe to put up on the youtubes.

I've got a little hero 5 with a media mod and a lav mic. That on a chest rig should be fine for POV for me. But I was thinking about using my handicam somehow. I have a nice shotgun mic for it and it has great zoom for filming gators and eagles and stuff.

I also have a muddy camera arm I am unlikely to use and can't seem to part with in classifieds.

So...

Anybody picking up what I'm putting down? 2x4 trailer stake brackets mounted to the back of the Jon's rear seat. Screw the tree mount base that usually straps to the tree to the 2x4. When you want to film, drop the 2x4 in the brackets, drop the arm and fluid head into the base, and pop the camera in. You'd have a nice 4k camcorder with a shotgun mic that you could swing around and film with from the back seat. Could swing out of the way or be removed completely and should hold a camera really sturdy.

Bonus points if I ever get around to buying the circuit breaker panel I want that has USB charging ports so I could charge the camera on the water with the deep cycle.

Seems like a cheap (for me) way to get a pretty handy filming rig. Any thoughts?

I think you’re on to something. I like the idea. The only thing I could think that would work differently is to have some type of bracket that would allow you to move the 2x4 to different spots. Move it to the front seat if you need to maybe. I don’t know how that would be achieved though.

Those trailer bunk brackets should let the 2x4 slide in and out. You could just add brackets to the middle seat or front deck I guess.

I went from a hero 5 to the 10 black and its worth the upgrade. Hypersmooth 4.0 is the real deal. I use it on my sxs which is rough. If you film it in 4k or even the available 8k you can crop/zoom if you build the video in 1080.

2x4 has tons of play in a side stake....u may need to buy/cut a wedge or 2 to help keep the 2x4 from rocking around inside the stake...or drill a hole in the stake and weld a nut onto it....long bolt with something welded on the end of the bolt to make a T handle

I was thinking a wedge or maybe even just wrapping the 2x4 in duct tape to make it tighter.

I'm on my way to the hardware store. May build and test today if it don't rain

Here is a deal I rigged up for my fish finder. It’s a shelf bracket that I had lying around with some plastic material for the top. It wedges itself into place the more you push down on it. It’s pretty solid.

Just wondering how the filming will work with boat bouncing around? May be just fine with video stabilization. Or may need some kind of floating gimbal for the camera? Capture some good video and let us know.

I think for the effort invested, it's a win. I wish my camera panned out a scooch more. May have to play with settings. May also look into the Rode Wireless Go II since it's 2-channel and the wife is a quite talker. But the shotgun mic does pretty good.
When the bracket breaks and you have to come up with Gen 2, Why not use pvc? Could make a swing arm that would gain you a little more "pan" and you could change the shot angle a bunch. If you got a wild hair, you could even run some yo-yo's on it too.

If you haven't checked out RAM Mounts, I think this would do what you want. Basically, you have spherical mounts on both your camera/device/whatever, and a 2-piece clamp that connects them. Because of the spherical mounts you have basically unlimited flexibility on how you position the device, and when you clamp down the connecter it's rock solid. I mounted my GPS to my motorcycle this way. IIRC they also make rod holders so if you have a bunch of spheres positioned around the boat you can have a rod holder on it if you don't have a camera on it right that moment.
