Breaking Amsteel Fibers

Has anyone broken fiber while splicing their amsteel? I was just using a fid and completely broke a strand of fibers in my 5/16 amsteel blue.... is this normal?
 
Same here, but if using it for a bridge I always clip in at the bottom of my tether.
