I shot ABOWYER GRIZZLY broadheads... stainless version. This was on a 80 lb doe. You can see entry wound then the head hit theopposite shoulder and tip curled back...rolled back...i freaked when i saw tip. No exit wound, i was lucky it dropped 25 yards away.
Thoughts ??

Did you catch the scapula on the entry side? Your hit is looking alot like a hit I just made on a buck last night. He was a thick ole boy. I didn't get any penetration. Shooting an expandable head. they will be coming off for good and the next time I step into the woods I'll be flinging a similar single bevel cut on contact head.

No, look at pic... entry is between 2 ribs... it hit shoulder on opposite side, steep angle shot. I justvthought this style head would have went thru

You hit a shoulder. There are no guarantees. What are you shooting for a bow? You should probably adjust your expectations. There are plenty of shots that won't penetrate with any reasonable setup...

56 Lb Reflex Deflex longbow I made based on Dale Stahls bow (he gave me a tracing of his mold) arrow was carbon, totall weight with head 700 grain... draw length 29.5

If you hit that ball and socket on the opposite shoulder, then I can see that happening. Still a great head. I’d like some but it’s hard to pass up the price of the single bevel grizzlies when I hadn’t had any problems that I could blame the head for.

I think of hitting in the shoulder area as a lottery regardless of head. You can skew the odds in your favor with arrow setup(and ensure penetration in a larger portion of it), but that big ol' ball and socket is still there.

Is that a tonto style tip on Abowyer heads? Tonto have less curling issues.
But your set up (700 grains) hits like a freight train. It had enough punch to curl a quality head. A lighter arrow probably wouldn't have had enough momentum to do that.
I think your glass is half full, not half empty.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never seen a ball and socket on the front shoulder. The scapula does have some heavy bone with a thin piece in between the two. There's a ball-and-socket joint in the back hip but it is very apparent that is not where you shot. Switch to a Broadhead made from tool steel instead of stainless steel. I'm not saying it will definitely go through those big heavy bones but it sure ain't going to hurt your chances

This is a great picture for you and for me. If you count the ribs your entry was between the 5th and 6th. On mine I center punched the 5th. I think both of us, with this shot placement is highly likely that we caught the scapula. Me for sure. My shot was more broadside so the far shoulder didn't come into play like your quartering away. With the damage my broadhead, and arrow shaft sustained I'm doubtful that I only caught the rib. Your shot was between 5 and 6 not a lot farther back, and depending on the position of her front leg on the entry side that shoulder could have been in play, plus the leg bone on the off side. Double whammy for your arrow.
