Buckingham Tree Squeeze

I was looking at this on line last night. I think that this can work well for us feint of hearts. This looks like it will really lock you in. It looks like you should be able to use it with a mobile set up as well.

I just ordered a tree squeeze. I figure this will give me the protection I want & and self assurance that if a slip or fall does happen it will catch me. The best of both worlds using this along with the WE Stepps. Call me a pu...., but as some of you know I took a fall a few years back. This will give me piece of mind to climb, and get me high enough to hunt safely before being tied in by my bridge and tether.

Joe have you gotten your tree squeeze yet? Id like to see this in action, im a little uneasy about the lineman’s belt alone

I have one, works great! I don't think I would climb spurs without it.
How do you like to attach it to your saddle?

I was thinking about getting one, but I wasn't sure the best way to use it with my Kestrel setup.

The tree squeeze goes around the tree and then you run your linemans through the metal rings right in front of you on your side of the tree. If you slip your linemans pulls the rings and that pressure it whats causes it to squeeze the tree.

Do you have a spliced eye on your linemans? It's hard to tell from photos, but it didn't look like most knots would fit through the ring.

Thanks.

I do, I have the Tethrd ropes. I run the spliced eye through the rings and clip to a carabiner on my left side and on the right side its hooked in with a ropeman1.

It seems like a pretty simple concept, do you think a DIY option is possible?

It's definitely an option. Some rings, a rope, and a prussic and you're in business.

My issue is that a device like this functions best if it is stiff. Steel core line is generally used and works nicely, but that stuff is impossible to find for a good price. A lot of commercial devices also have custom "handles" that keep your knuckles from getting skint up, and make operation easier. These parts are hard to replace.

I've made several prototypes, and just can't find something I personally am happy with.

When I get a chance, I’d like to try taping a real heavy duty zip tie to a rope. That might add enough stiffness to do what the steel core line does.

I was just thinking, if you did a paracord weave like a sheath on a climbing rope that may give the desired stiffness. Sort of like people do to keep steps on aiders open.

Or zip tying a piece of wire/ cable to the outside of the rope maybe?

I used the loop end of my daughter’s calf roping lariat to make a DIY squeeze. It was plenty stiff and gripped the tree bark well. Not sure how strong it is? Probably not cost effective: anything connected to a horse is stupid expensive!

I actually got the chance two weeks ago to train with a local power company. All the linesman are required now to use a squeeze similar to that setup. They hooked me up with a set of spurs and let me give it a try. I cut out twice on a 20ft climb. Those power poles are slick. The belt caught me both times without letting me slide at all. It was easy to recover after I cut out. I highly recommend this set up for those using spurs.

nutterbuster why not use a large diameter vinyl or nylon coated steel runner cable like used for dog runs? would that be feasible?

Are you folks trying to mimic the tree squeeze because of its price, for a DIY project, or is it flawed for our use and trying to make something better? Maybe a combination, just curious.

Cost is definitely a problem, as is bulk and weight. Linemans and arborist gear is way heavier duty than what we need.

Anyone try crossing there lineman's belt in front of the tree?
