Had a few kickouts with the rope mod on Hawk Heliums (2019 3 step) Buckle and factory strap seem much tighter to tree.Thinking of going back to strap and buckles for safety. Only one problem I hate buckles and they dont pack like the rope mod. Can the buckless method be made tight as with a buckle to prevent kickouts of the lower step??

I’ve had my heliums cammed down pretty tight with a daisy chain strap. I didn’t really try to test a kick out but they were super tight to the tree I thought anyway.

I have found the buckleless method gets the stick much tighter to the tree than the standard 8mm rope mod. The stick sags less, so there is less chance of the it kicking out. You have to wrap the strap around the button differently than you wrap the rope. Check out Nutterbusters video. His method works the best out of those I’ve tried.
The only downside with this is the length of strap. Because you make several wraps, you really don’t have much strap to work with. This means you can’t get into any tree beyond maybe 15” in diameter.

Good to know about your experience with 8mm rope. I’ve had no concerns with the buckless method. I also tie the way Nutterbuster demonstrates. The strap is a bit short but it hasn’t been an issue so far.

I also use daisies, only time I’ve had one kick is with a long aider which is to be expected. I use a single one now and no issues.

I just put a piece of innertube on my buckle to quiet it in case it hits metal.

Good to know. I don’t like aiders in general but I do have the WE single aider that I like quite a bit and I would be using that if i use one at all.

Here’s how I do mine with a buckle and bicycle inner tube

Ive tried the factory strap, 1/8 daisy chained amsteel and this ripe mod, i dont know why its kicking out on you but i havent had any trouble as long as all 4 points are touching the bark and i use a 320200920_210257.jpg20200920_210217.jpg step aider, may be worth a shot if you prefer the rope idea, all you need is a cam cleat, about $20 and a few feet of 8mm rope, it even bites good on holly trees and poplar
