Building a Home Gym, Need Recommendations

A few kettlebells (swings, getups, goblet squats), Indian clubs for shoulder rotations, bands, and a mat to do body weight exercises (push-ups, planks, crunches). Couple that with a lot of mountain hiking and yard work

Just my 2 cents: spend 20bucks and try Ryan Humiston’s home gym workout, It’s designed around muscle connection and everything is low weight, high rep time under tension. This way you don’t need to buy a lot and you can start with dumbbells only and add as needed but I’ve found I rarely use anything over 40lbs, maybe for benching but mostly it’s 35-40 lbs for 20-30 super slow reps creating an unimaginable burn

I'm nobody's excuse for a gym rat or fitness fanatic, so my input may not be that valuable. But if you're on a budget, it's tough to go wrong with a couple-three kettlebells - think 20#, 30#, and 40#, a freemium kettlebells app, and bodyweight exercises. On my Samsung, the apps I use are called "Kettlebell Workout" and "Daily Ab Workout Free"; there are probably different ones on iTunes. Plus, you can bring a kettlebell on road trips if you travel that way for work. Since it's pretty easy to develop bad form and hurt yourself, it's probably worth periodic sessions with a trainer certified to teach whatever type of lifting you're contemplating. I know a kettlebell trainer and will periodically check-in with him to make sure I'm not too far off course.

If any of you guys are struggling with getting started in the gym, I’ll post my workout I’m doing during this last semester when I can’t be in the gym every day. You’ll want a day of rest between each session. This is basically the workout our college football team is doing during the offseason so it’s challenging but only requires 3 workouts a week. It’s really basic so it shouldn’t be a huge problem to do it in a home gym by substituting exercises.
