Has anybody tried this before? This seems logical and not too cumbersome. If you run your length of oplux or other tether material back through your bridge loops and connect back to your carabiner. This will protect you from a bridge or even an ascender failure without bringing anything extra into the tree. Let me know your thoughts. I’d like to get in the tree and give this a shot.5B4B2424-B264-4320-9FA8-8ACFD8CD590B.png

Sounds very logical, if you have enough length left in your tether, which would depend upon the diameter tree you're in. I would feel safer using a figure 8 on a bight instead of the overhand on a bight though, along with a longer tail and a safety knot.

If I’m seeing what I think, Tying in with a figure 8 would be much better. If that Kong failed, you’ll have a lot of slack... you’ll be squeezed and dropped, and I think it would be a terrible outcome.

Agreed. I just picked this rope up from wildedge. I do plan on a better knot. I usually sew the tail end with my speedy stitcher so it cannot come undone at all. I will have to play with the diameter of the tree and see what works and what doesn’t.

No doubt it will squeeze you but I’m not sure how you would drop. I certainly see a severe case of hip pinch! Certainly less than ideal but should prevent you from falling for sure giving you an opportunity to recover. I will play with the setup and see the limitations. And post my results

Yea, there would definitely be some slack to take up on the fall. A lot of guys clip the end of the tether to a linesman loop, so this method might actually absorb a bit of the shock as it pinches you. I tie an Alpine butterfly on my rappel line/tether and connect to the belay loop on a rock climbing harness, after wrapping around the tree like a second tether, with almost no slack. There's countless threads on here to accomplish redundancy for countless failures. In the end, no fall is going to be fun.

Biggest issue I see is the width of the tree and there not being enough slack. I like the idea of a back up bridge without the bulk. Your way sounds pretty simple.

How about tying an alpine butterfly in the tag end of your tether and clipping that to the lineman loop on one side of the saddle. I’m going to experiment with it. I use my rappel line as my tether, so there’s plenty of rope to work with regardless of the size of the tree.

I’m thinking I’ll probably go that route or something like it. I’d rather not have another carabiner but it’s a simple bridge backup
