So I was showing my wife the DIY Kestrel clone saddles on this forum and marveling at the two curved panel design for it's awesome butt cupping effect.

Typical of women she gave me a you're a dummy look and said "You can do that much easier with only one short vertical seam".

A copy paper pattern with taped seams proved her point in about 1 minute.

Less strength with the seam oriented that way??? Maybe stronger??? I don’t sew but want to learn

I would either double layer the saddle or put a webbing strap across the seam. Like an external thong saddle.

I am sewing on my wife's table top singer. One of those $100 Walmart buys. It will sew through two layers of webbing and duck cloth.

I was just going to ask what kind of sewing machine as I want to get one.. and the cheap Walmart one is about what I can afford.. can you send me the pattern ?

Try this by ckossuth......https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/diy-kestrel-clone.5757/post-80832. I think there is a pdf on that thread with more sizes.

This is as close to the machine I use as I could find...about $100

But....for about $100 more they offer this version.....maybe some one in the forum has used this model or one close to it and can comment on whether or not it is worth the extra money. Or I'll buy it for my wife for Christmas and borrow it. She's been wanting to recover our fainting couch but complains the machine she has will not sew the upholstery.

I measured hip bone to hip bone around my butt then added an inch for 1/2 inch seams for a individual custom length.

I do not have a butt so it came to a total of 22 inches long.

The middle width is 12 inches and the sides are 8 inches. Pretty much on center.
