So, being a robust big boned fella, I was having problems using a perch style platform due to the step pulling away from the tree. Had to work real hard to get the step to cam over tight enough, even with using the platform as leverage. I've been using these old military style cam over center buckles for all sorts of stuff and have never had a buckle fail. The straps they come with are crap though. I've used them for pulling engines (field expedient limb hanger for a come-along), holding suspension parts together to get out or the field, lots of torture. The straps aren't much to speak to, but the buckles are great. Plus, you can get 5 of them for $10. Here's what I came up with. Works great! Its amazing how tight these little buckles get the step.
Heres a link to a source for the buckles and straps. I recommend replacing the strap. To short anyways.
