Headed to Williamsport for my grandmothers funeral. My wife is out of town so it’s just me and the dog. Since I got the dog it’s easier to just camp if I need to stop. Might stop in VA, MA or WV on the way up. If any of y’all are familiar with some campgrounds national parks/forests etc. along one of the routes I’d appreciate suggestions. Can't go wrong pretty much anywhere on the blue ridge
I’ve camped in South Carolina and North Carolina on the blue ridge, I guess it does run all the way up though doesn’t it?

About an hour from Williamsport you have the PA Grand Canyon (pine creek gorge). Plus there’s an awesome gift shop with killer sandwiches along 414 but I forget the name haha.

You can use Hipcamp to find private campgrounds. Also many of the hotel chains are dog friendly. LaQuinta is one that is. Also some of the hiltons are as well.

I despise 81 so I’d definitely vote for straight north through prime whitetail country then east to your destination ( if your strategic sone of those spots could be close to a future out of state hunt someday) sorry for your loss!!

First, sorry for your loss.

Looks like 80 on the Ohio route. Anywhere in ANF is good camping. Most of the ANF FS roads have dispersed campsites (free, first come first serve campsites). If you really want the scenic route, go a little further north and travel route 6 through Warren/Kinzua/Kane/St Mary's (stop at Straubs for a tour and beer)/ Coudersport, etc

If you take the WV route, Stonewall Jackson WMA has a nice campground. If you're looking for a more scenic non-interstate drive through the mountains and don't mind adding a couple hours to your trip you can head through Elkins, Davis, a few different ways to slither up toward Cumberland and catch 99 up to Williamsport. You can pull off and stealth camp pretty much anywhere in that area that's National Forest. There's a road that follows the Cheat River that's a really nice drive.

jump off route 6 in galeton to Lyman run resevoir. Full site there but still a hike from Williamsport

If you take I 79 through WV, you'll have Stonewall Jackson, Burnsville, and Elk River WMA right in the middle of the state. These all have lakes and fishing. If you want to stop north central WV, then you have Cooper's Rock State Forest which is a beautiful view with some cool history. A lot of the places to camp are in the mountains that are about 1 hour east of interstate travel and out of your way.

yep, area around this red pin is national forest and you can camp there legally and for free, this whole area is near Virginia and just south of Davis that you mentioned.

Cheat River starts north of Durbin. If he hits 250, he'll drive over Cheat Mountain.

If you take the route through WV you have all of the places mentioned in WV as well as several campgrounds in Garrett County MD including at Deep Creek lake, and Youghiogheny Lake, as well as a couple in Savage River State Forest.

Plus, you’d be within a couple miles of my house so I’d buy you a beer if the timing works out.

I ended up getting a really late start today after working on the cars, but that’s the way it goes. I’m only to Knoxville now but may drive till midnight or so my time. Not sure where that’ll put me. I was going to stay on 81 to go through Harrisburg and pick up my dad but it looks like he’s getting a rental so I might eat the hour and go up through WV.

Anyone know if any of these state or national forest land campsites have after hours check ins? Like you just pay on your way out the next morning. I seem to remember doing that before.

Wal-Mart parking lot. I've driven across the country multiple times and that's a quick and cheap way to go if you arent stopping long. I hate I-81 too but you can cover some ground. Plenty of GWNF land in VA though. Word of warning: VA troopers use radar while driving and can get you coming and going. 20 mph over is a wreckless driving and you will have to go to court even if out of state (don't ask me how I know)

I did bring two recurves, a target, a fly fishing rod (no reel?), and 90% of my saddle and climbing gear for no reason. Probably won’t use it but thought it would be cool to show my grandfather and uncle since they both have done plenty of hunting and fishing in their time They might not know what to think of the saddle hunting.

By timing works out I hope you mean it’s 5 o’clock somewhere when I roll through at 9am. I already have the yuenglings on Ice. Joking aside, it’d be a pleasure to meet you,

It’s not the best circumstances that I find myself up north but i have to make the most of the trip. If my wife was with she wouldn’t be down for meeting strangers from the internet. Lol
