Camping hammock?

Chill gorilla had good reviews on hammock forums. I did the diy tarp from ripstopbytheroll

I thought I had an old tent laying around that I could repurpose the rain fly but I must have thrown it out....

Is the diy kit a good project for someone who's never used a sewing machine in their life?

Tried to look up chill gorilla but no website...only amazon...I don't do business with amazon

Yeah that's the only place you can buy the chill gorilla. It is china made.

It was my first sewing project after my hammock. It isn't too hard of a project. I bought the kit with the catenary curves already cut. It is easier than trying to cut it yourself.

If you do try it, look up Jellyfish on YouTube. She has good videos of diy hammock gear.

I've used this for years and have no complaints. Is small but works great for hammocks. With it not being straight along the edge it makes it easier to get in and out of your hammock. In colder weather I sleep in a military surplus bivy sack and sleeping back inside of the hammock. Been in weather down to the teens with no issues.

I bought a hammock and bug net last year when REI had them on sale. I only tried it once after hunting. This spring I drug an old tent out of the woods that was half buried in mud and had to be there at least 5 years. I hosed it down and dried it. It has several big rips. I have been looking for a rainfly to go on sale or to buy a cheap one on Amazon for my hammock. Maybe I will try to sew a fly from this old tent. The rainflys seem more expensive than the hammocks.

There’s a bunch on amazon. Search hammock rain fly. But I will say same as hammocks. You get what you pay for. The amazon ones may be fine but I’ve never tried them. Yes mine was pricier but it was like saddles. It was from a reputable cottage industry maker.

I got into this a few summers ago and love em for hanging out at the house but I took it with me camping and was not a fan. When I tried to sleep I was miserable. I could not get comfortable, too much droop or sag in the hammock for me and then when it began raining I got soaked under a rain fly. Thank god I had a tent right next to me already pitched and bailed into it for shelter. Maybe I’m missing something, not really sure but I really want to give this another try just for hunting season. If I were able to get the hammock to be straighter it would be more comfortable I’m sure. I’ve been thinking of using ratchet straps to tighten the hammock to fix the issues. Any suggestions here?

You should lay at an angle to get a flat lay in a conventional hammock. The other option is to get a bridge hammock. The bridge hammock has a flat lay.

Tarp placement is a bit more complicated.

Makes sense, I really want to give this a go for when I go bow hunting on public in a few weeks!

This is a huge shot in the dark... anybody have a New Tribe Tree boat? I've asked a few times over at New Tribe but they have no idea when they're making them. Something about a tree saddle craze......

Check out hammock forums. A lot of info there too. Also, you want a good sag in the hammock. You want the hammock at about a 30° angle from the tree. A good way to get this is make a gun with your thumb and index finger. Put your thumb on the rope coming from the tree and your index finger should intersect the rope as well. Kind of hard to describe.

The tarp looks good. Do you have 2 lines coming off the tree for hammock though? If the second is a ridgeline, you can actually tie that into your hammock. It will help to get a more consistent "sag."

It is always so hard to look at photos and details on my phone.

Yeah...I'm sure it's incorrect....I added a paracord ridge line mainly because there is still 20mph gusts right now and I wanted something a little more beefy

Here is pic of mine. I have the ridge line tied on directly to the hammock creating a good sag. The bug net is a "Fronkey" style I noted earlier in the thread.

I would suggest getting the hammock straps a bit higher and tying the ridgeline directly to the hammock. If rain is coming and you're sleeping in it, you'll want the tarp hung closer to the top of the ridgeline.

Also, you'll also want a prussic or other small diameter cord as a drip line.

If you need further assistance, let me know. I'll probably throw mine up tomorrow night to test out my quilt. I can get more and better pics for.
