Can't be me, could it be me?

Venting a little bit but...

Last three hunts that I've had, does have spooked off before they could get in range after staring at something in the complete opposite direction from where I was in the stand. I could never see whatever it was that the does found offensive and I was down wind each time and no swirling.

I’m a big proponent of just hunting the wind and not trying to eliminate my scent. That’s a heated debate that I don’t intend to stoke right now.

However, I am super mindful of the path I take to my hunt location now, because scent I’ve left on the ground walking in has gotten me busted more times than I would like to think about. Could that be at play here?

I use to use a detergent that if you washed your camo and put it way with the thought of "I don't have to wash it at the start of next season" and it would have an ammonia smell to it. It was hard to detect with the human nose but the deer damn sure could smell it. I was busted over 300yds away while upwind by a group of does I was sitting and watching through my binos. I thought..."Theres no way they smelled me!" This happened several times by other deer before my uncle asked me what detergent I used and he said the same thing happened to him. I think it might've been Hunters Specialties brand soap but that was many years ago and I haven't used that detergent again.

The last two hunts they did cross the trail I came in on, but they were upwind of that point for well over an hour before they alerted on whatever phantom was that spooked them.

Does have pestering bucks on their tails right now. Could be getting chased around.

Speaking of scent control I managed to get Tinks 69 in my Copenhagen this morning. I was laughing that I may have invented a new heated scent dispersement system. I guess my breath was not offensive at all this morning.

You could call that Copenhagen Golden Blend.

Could be a million things. I say back off that location 3-5 days and let things settle down. If it’s public, find another spot for awhile. It’s interesting how we tend to access and exit the same way each time. Maybe change that up too. I’m kind of always trying to think how can make them feel at ease again? Sometimes it works, oftentimes it doesn’t.

@SNIPERBBB, You’re a trapper so you can relate, those alpha male coyotes get spooky and finicky if you’re walking in, try to drive; pull sets for awhile then start over after a week or so; change up your lures from castor based to something else; do some blind sets on a trail or under a fence or crossing log. Relate that thinking to the herd you’re hunting.
