CAYG Aider Question

Hey SH. I chopped down my new hawk helium’s and now I’m going to make a CAYG aider to use like DaveT does in his videos.

My question is what knot do I use to turn the webbing into a closed loop. I have the webbing but don’t want to just tie two knots on top of each other to connect the two ends if that’s not safe.

waterknot

Is there a link to video? I tried to find it after officially ruling out a 5-step aider yesterday (scars to prove it :tearsofjoy:).

Last season I used 4 BEAST sticks and hoping with a CAYG Aider, I can get that down to 3.

Thanks guys! I'm actually looking for a video where you make/demonstrate a CAYG aider. These two will still be helpful but if you have that as well, could you post it?

Awesome ...thanks Dave. So dang hot and humid today I'm researching and tinkering around the house.

I'm not a knot expert..... Ijust copied what the video said but made the loop larger so i could throw the loop over the top step of my climbing stick

I made a tubular webbing cayg aider just like in Dave's videos, I had it with me Saturday if I would have thought anyone was interested in it I would of broke it out and showed it and you could have tried it!

No worries...

I have plenty of climb grade webbing so it should be a quick and easy experiment. I am positive the 5-step aider on sticks is NOT for me lol.

5 steps is too many. I'm 6'3'' and limber and I gave up on my 3 step aider in favor of a two step version. I simply couldn't get the stick high enough to have the lower steps be helpful past the top 2. They just dangled at ground level or overlapped the stick below. *this is w full size LW sticks, I could see a short stick using a slightly longer aider. One other thing to keep in mind is that the longer your aider is, the more wobbly it is, with a tendency to kick out to one side or the other as you climb it

I don't have a video per se of me climbing up a CAYG aider (I hunt solo) but if you look in some of my recent videos i walk through setting the sticks up on a tree. It is not difficult, just put it over the sticks that you are attaching to the tree..... really would be boring to watch me attach it and unattach it as i climb.

It’s every bit as simple as @DaveT1963 says. I used it some last year. Single step aiders are much more forgiving than multiple steps. It just feels safer. I do like multiple steps especially for that first stick.

The only think I'm thinking about doing is putting some type of clip toward the foot hold so that my foot doesn't come in and out of the webbing. Could be a bad idea that proves fruitless in practice, but I hate trying to get my feet in and out of aiders. Once I get mine made (and if it works), I'll let everyone know.

For multistep aiders the webbing is what causes the issues.....gotta come up with a better material that would keep it's shape and resist spinning around moving the step. I was thinking about the coated clothes hanger cable or something similar. Open to ideas on a better material. Maybe a large diameter hemp rope or similar?
