Hey all, looking for some input on ascending my tree that fork off into a Y shape at about 15ft up. I am finding whenever I get to the fork, I have trouble like I'm not sure where to put my stick, tether, etc. Wondering if maybe using a squirrel step or a mini stick to help traverse the fork might help. To all those that single stick and have been doing it awhile, how do you handle the forks in a tree that split off into a Y?

This image perfectly sums up what Im having trouble ascending.

I align so that I'm going up the bottom of whichever leg I'm trying to go up. The stick seems to stay more stable if I can keep it as perpendicular as possible to the ground.

are you wanting to ascend past the fork? If it were me, I'd set up in the fork.

top of the stick would be as close to the fork as possible. set platform on left or right fork, tether in, then use crotch to step up to platform and adjust tether height.

I handle forks roughly the same as I handle any other branch. I'll advance my stick as close as I can to the obstruction so that when I'm standing on my stick my upper torso/head is above the obstruction. At that point it's a matter of:
  1. Throwing on my LB above the obstruction (to act as a catch in-case I fall/stick kicks out/spontaneous tornado appears/etc).
  2. Unhook tether/remove from tree
  3. Girth hitch tether above obstruction
  4. Slowly transfer weight from LB to tether
  5. Remove LB/hang from tether
  6. Move stick above obstruction
The trick (for me) is to place the stick as close to the obstruction as possible so you have room for your upper torso/tether/stick to place above the obstruction after your movement. Obviously take into consideration the lean of the fork when placing your tether on step #3 so you can safely transfer your weight in step #4.

EDIT: after re-reading my post there's a lot of mentions of obstructions and movements. too much coffee this morning :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Yes, I like to set up roughly around 30ft when all set up.

Thanks for the input @boyne bowhunter & @heretic. When I get home today I'll try that method of placing my stick high as possible/at a slant as pictured to see if I have any better luck at getting past it.
