Climbing rope for tree access

So my package came from treestuff Friday, and I've been playing with the petzl pirana decender. I forgot how much fun rappelling was. My question is, how are you carrying your rope in with you? I don't normally carry a backpack for early season, so stuffing it in a bag would be a last resort. Thinking something like this http://www.amazon.com/Blackhawk-Enhance ... B007ZZO8NI

How much rope did you get? That holds a lot so might be bigger than you need. It's also 1000d nylon so it might be really loud. I have a couple bags made of that and they are not quiet when cold.

I am planning on just strapping it with my other crap to a MOLLE frame, but it won't be here till tomorrow so I don't know how that will work.

You could just coil it and clip a strap into the two ends of the coil, and wear it over your shoulder if you have no other bag.

I'm carrying 65 foot right now and it wraps up fairly small so that I can put it in my backpack with my other stuff. If you are looking at that bag I would considered just getting a small daypack or sling style pack. You could also probably figure out some way to sling it over your shoulder.

You could just wind it in a loop and carry it like a bandoleer. Just make sure to play the twists out of the line if you're going to to use an end loop to attach it to the tree or it'll wind up like you wouldn't believe once you start pulling the eye up the rope.

I'm only using the rope for coming down. I was thinking it would be nice to have a dedicated bag that I could just feed the rope out of as I rappelled down. Its thick in most spots I hunt, so just throwing it over my shoulder would be a huge pita. They have smaller bags like this, I just clicked the first one that came up on Google. Carrying 65'

A large throwline bag should hold 60' or so of rope. You can get one as cheap as $24 I think at treestuff.com.

How high are you guys climbing that you need 65ft of rope? How much does that rope weigh? Are most of you using a single stick to climb, or using a throw line? I like the idea of a throw line, but not practical in most of the areas I hunt and impossible in the dark.

I'm carrying 65' so that I can tie off one end at the base of the tree if needed in case I can't isolate a branch on the tree, so most of the time I have almost double what I need. It is about 4 pounds. When I use the rope I am using a throwline and climbing using SRT. I did it a few times last year, and probably about 10 so far this year. If I am hunting on the fly I am finding that it takes me a little longer to set up the tree than if I used climbing sticks, but I love how compact my gear is and how little I need. I think we a tree pre-set with paracord I could be up the tree and ready in minutes.

Thanks for the gregre info guys, I have a few more questions.
1) What is the smallest branch you would consider hanging your rope from?
2) do you have to shorten your rope bridge to be able to reach the climbing gear?

This VTIO srt document states 100mm which is about 4 inches. I have seen that number elsewhere as well. They always state healthy branches/forks and as close to the base of the tree as possible. I picking up a book on climbing and I would recommend the same to anyone interested in this technique.

Yes, I shorten my bridge. I fooled around with temporary bridges but ended up just putting a slip knot in it on the outside of the paw that I can pop out when I get to hunting height.

Finally got all my climbing gear and tried it out with the web today. Worked good in the yard, will see how it works hunting.

What setup are you using?

petzl rig and ascender with my guidos web, thanks to all the guys that posted on here it should be a fairly short learning curve.

I've been following this thread from the beginning. This whole rope system has me intrigued and I have to try it. I started buying the equipment and the only thing left to get is the rope. I know I need a static rope. Do you guys have any suggestions other than sticking with the Bandit rope that we already use?

The bandit is my favorite so far mike. Tree stuff.com has it for .79 a foot I think and free shipping with a code (it's on the site somewhere.). I tried the km3 and find it to run a little rougher than the bandit. I know some of the other guys like it though.

Scott, thanks I was leaning towards the bandit but wasn't sure if something better is out there.

See if anyone else chimes in, I'm still not the expert

I went with the KMIII MAX hoping the tougher exterior would run over limbs easier. Seems to work well for me so far. Bandit is nice too though!

Bandit seems to be easier to tie knots with though.

Well I went with the Bandit. 80' with an eye splice. thats more rope than I need but I'll have extra for another bridge or tree rope if need be.

You'll also have enough to tie off at the base of an adjacent tree if its too difficult to isolate a tie in point!
