Convert Lifeguard to Safeguard (Spring Removal)

Thanks Jake, I realize the time it takes wouldn't be that economical, just exploring options. I will finish the season with my grigri but I don't care for the way it unloads if you take the weight off of it.

Madrock.ca website said they don't ship to the US, only Canada. I will try it again later. I see the lifeguard retails for around $90 but nobody has them. I see some on ebay the buy it now prices start around $180, as high as$250 or more. Nothing like gouging a fellow hunter.

Give them a call or send them an email. Several people on the site have ordered them and had shipped to the US - two that I know of were in the last month.

I’m guessing after grinding rivet flange, the slotted washer type retainer might unscrew, or why bother with slot. If it can be screwed back on after removing the spring, then mushrooming it over is only to prevent unscrewing, not holding it together.

You guys are funny, but I guess this is really what the country has come to, I asked a yes or no question and get comedy central B roll stuff....

Just for some perspective, I have helped remove and rebuild the main rotor assembly on a Blackhawk helicopter. Once completed I was lucky enough to get a ride in it to. If your skills prevent you from modding your own gear, it's better that you keep gouging online to buy more.

We meant no offense, but you have to realize there are folks who read these forums who are much less skilled or may overestimate their ability, so I think our lighthearted joking was aimed more at them then you.

I've owned and used both (as well as a Grigri), if all you're using it for is rappelling there's absolutely no difference between the Lifeguard the Safeguard. The Grigri is actually smoother. The only advantage to the Safeguard is that the lack of a return spring makes it grab a little quicker transitioning from unweighted to weighted. That makes it a bit safer as a hunting tether connection.

Point taken 131, I don't recommend anyone tear into something like this without knowing how to put it back together to safely function as intended, and if in doubt, don't. My sole purpose was to find it if anyone had done it, I figure I'm at more risk dodging highway traffic than climbing a tree.

The slotted piece isn’t threaded after further investigating, carefully grind the edge that’s mushroomed over, take spring out and remushroom with punches and hammer.

I have a Lifeguard for sale in the classifieds, someone had better buy it so this can become just an academic question!
