I’m coverting a homemade stick I’ve used for years tomorrow into a one stick. Right now the step length is 21”. Based on where holes are at for safety etc, I either need to leave it at 21” or I could cut it down to any length. Seems like most EWO’s are 12 or 15. What length does everyone like and why? I will be using this just for climbing and still using a platform if that makes a difference.

Before you go chopping it up, how comfortable is the 21" step for you?
It's easier to cut it shorter and shorter again than to go too short the first time...

I had a Shikar that was 15 or 16" and when I stood on the bottom step it hurt my calves when I hooked my legs behind the platform.
I like 18 to 20" from bottom to top. That's where it 'feels good' behind my knees and it's a good step distance as well.

The length now is fine, even with heavy bibs on. Smaller would pack even better but that’s about it. I just don’t want to drill holes for the cam cleat and then wish I had it shorter I guess.

Also, wish I could find the exact template for the harken cleat so I could drill the holes on a press before it comes rather than trying by hand.

I had the same experience. Started real short and found it almost impossible with hunting clothes on to get from the bottom step to the platform. Put everything on an 18in stick and it was perfect.
