Hello saddle hunters,

I'd like to get into coyote hunting. I've got warm clothes, deer rifle, shotgun with turkey choke, and lots of ambition. What I don't have is mouth calls, electronic caller, or decoy. I'd love a nice FoxPro caller with built in decoy but I don't have hundreds to spend on a new hobby.

These are options I'm considering:

- Mouth call and predator decoy (fuzzy tail that spins around)
- Remote controlled electronic call without decoy

I appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance!

I downloaded some mp3 files into an mp3 player and put playback on a loop. I suppose you could use a Bluetooth speaker nowadays. Back then I had a battery operated speaker I set out with the mp3 player attached.

Did it work for you?

Well I successfully called in coyotes, so yes. My problem was being able to get the gun on them without getting busted or having them circle behind me.

I'd call that a success. What you mentioned is exactly why I'm trying to figure out if a decoy would be a smart buy over a nicer call. In theory they'd see the decoy and not me moving my gun to make the shot.

Free/cheap app with a small Bluetooth speaker and save up for a good call if you want to get more into it. The foxpro's are really nice though, I grew up right around the corner from their headquarters/warehouse and have used them quite a bit, and still do too.

I have wanted to get into coyote hunting in the off season for a few years. Last night I was out burning up cardboard boxes in the fire pit when our dog wandered into the woods. Then I heard a coyote start calling less then 100 yards into the woods. I ran into the house and grabbed a spot light and handgun and ran into the woods calling for the dog to come. He finally came to me after a frantic few minutes of searching and calling. That's what prompted me to finally get into coyote hunting.

I live in a wooded urban area where they don't allow hunting with a firearm. Once I get a Bluetooth speaker, mouth call, or electronic call, I think I'll preset a tree on the edge of the woods and see if I can get the coyote will my bow.

And this is why coyote hunters, and trappers, fail. They see the obvious problem and don't adjust reality.

This, you can buy good mp3 files as well for a few bucks and play them on your phone. I have one of the basic foxpro's with a bunch of good sounds and it really is worth it. Foxpro Pup Distress 3 is a killer here (and popular most places)

Try to have some sort of blocker behind you to help mitigate downwind circling like a road, creek, steep embankment, etc... whatever is available in your habitat. My best nighttime sets are bottoms of fields with a road about 100 yards behind me.

One thing to note in coyote calls... because its so prevalent now, every coyote east of the Mississippi has heard a rabbit in distress call by now. So you might want to get creative with your playlists. I inow one guy that recorded collicy baby screams and had success with those.

Double-check your state’s regulations on electronic calls. If they are illegal, don’t even think about it.
I have the Primos Raspy Coaxer call, which has a rabbit noise and a mouse noise. It behaves like a grunt or bleat tube. I honestly think it sounds almost too good, and it has brought coyotes and wildcats in with just a few squeaks, but they have been super alert and the yotes picked me out grabbing my bow every time. If they are within 50-200 yds, it’s an awesome way to close the distance. If they are inside of 50, they will be onto you as fast as you can blow on it, so make sure you’re super camouflaged and your timing is sharp.

Welcome to another rabbit hole. I have a Foxpro Fusion and Spitfire. They are both high quality calls and I highly recommend them. A viable and less costly alternative is the Cass Creek iHunt 750 app and the iHunt Ultimate Game Call. It uses a blue tooth connection to your phone and the sound quality isn't too bad. I called in an alpha male with this very call a few seasons ago. They have very easy interactive playlists so you can set up sequences with gaps etc. I think you're in the game for like $70 not including the app but when I got mine it was like $7.95 and I don't think I've paid more since but then again I haven't been hitting it hard over the last 3 or 4 years either.

I've killed several coyotes with turkey calls also. It is something they hear a lot in the wild but not something they seem to associate with people trying to shoot them like a rabbit in distress call.

Some distress call will tend to spook deer also so if you are trying this in season it could hurt your spot. On the other hand, I believe that turkey calls tend to put deer at ease and since they eat the same mast it can actually call deer in to a spot.

I've got a a few gift cards for LL Bean and they had two electronic calls. One was in my price range (Primos Dogg Catcher 2) so I had them set it aside and I hope to grab it tomorrow. I do appreciate everyone's advice. I know isn't "easy" to call in coyotes but it isn't easy hunting deer either. Although deer fill the freezer and that adds to the motivation.

Look into a .25 or .30 PCP air rifle w/ a moderator. Quietly puts em down.
