Coyotes... Shoot or pass?

I don't care if you guys are shooting them or not, I have coyote hunted before and had a blast. But for those saying that removing them can't possibly create more coyotes:

While you can temporally reduce their numbers by trapping they come back to pre-trapping levels within 8 months:

And although you can reduce breeding by hunting and trapping, you open up that area to increased immigration from other dispersing coyotes in surrounding areas as well as increase the amount prey on the landscape which can lead to larger litter sizes (some studies have shown they could double or triple):

From my reading, it sounds like whatever individuals you kill will be at least replaced within a year unless you are trapping/shooting them all year long every year. Meaning from the "shoot them while im deer hunting" standpoint we are all doing basically nothing except collecting some sweet furs to swaddle our infants
You cant expect to reduce populations by working on one farm or section of a township. It takes a concentrated and thorough program to do so. 75% of the breeding population needs to be taken out each year to be effective.

Just to play devils advocate for a minute....

Thats why I just shoot all my deer and cut their head off and leave em to rot, all to nature nothing to waste right??

I like to eat deer. I don’t like to eat Coyotes. If you want to eat em by all means give it a go. But yes, animals will clean that deer up in no time if you want to push the issue but i’m not about feeding prime venison to coyotes.

Btw, no wanton waste regarding coyotes, no bag limits, no restriction on shooting hours, and the season never closes, ever. Interpret those laws any way you want to but the state game managers are telling you to shoot all you want.

I have no problem obliging but not saying you have to. I realize people are sensitive as hell nowadays but i typically don’t give their sensitivities much thought.

Like I said above I shoot them occasionally myself and grew up hunting them, just curious about this line of reasoning.

So its only a "waste" if it tastes good and you let it rot? What if I don't like venison? Am I no longer wasting it if I let it lie? Coyotes eat other coyotes too, so when you shoot one and leave it you are still feeding the others meat and contributing to their success. So isn't that counter productive?

Those unlimited bags on coyotes should tell you that the game officials realize that there is no way you can effectively reduce the population with hunting and they give people the ability to protect livestock/pets should the moment arise.

So you eat Coyotes? Man, that’s messed up!

If you don’t like venison don’t hunt deer.

I’m a simple man with simple answers. I don’t expect everyone to like those answers but sure isn’t going to make me change em.

Sweet and Sour Jerky is awesome. You have to get the marinade correct though. To long in the pineapple juice and the meat gets soft...

Im just pointing out there is a double standard with predators, I absolutely support predator control when necessary and you are more than welcome to shoot them if you please

but... if you dont like eating coyotes dont hunt them right? You are choosing to shoot them so they won't eat their prey and then let them go to waste and that is really no different that shooting a deer for eating your crops (its prey) and letting it lay in the field for a week. The relative preference of your personal taste shouldn't determine whether or not you use something you killed should it?

Everything has to eat something, we eat the deer so we kill them, same for the coyote... but if you aren't at least using a coyotes pelt... and you know they are impossible to remove from the landscape, what are you actually accomplishing by killing them?

It's all subjective. I throw away bones, but people in the Caribbean like to eat marrow. They think I'm wasteful then. Wasteful is inherently a value judgement, and we would have to define it precisely to really have this discussion, and then agree on the definition.

Instead of wasting a coyote, maybe we can think of it as saving a bunch of fawns. Then, what you do with the coyote is of less importance. Did we waste Bin Laden's body tossing him in the drink?
