Heading out to preset some trees. When pre-drilling holes for Cranford steps what size are y’all using?

Last year I did it by hand with no predrilled holes… I won’t do that again.

I've never predrilled with Cranfords but if I were to, I would probably choose a 1/4 inch auger bit. A 1/4 inch should leave a good bit of wood for the threads to bite into. Those auger bits have the little screw on the tip and pull themselves into the tree. Maybe someone who predrills for screw ins will chime in.

If you drill now, they will most likely be grown over by the season. You want to drill AFTER the main growing season .

I use cranford t steps for mobile hunting. They are easily my favorite mobile hunting climbing method. You don’t need to pre drill holes for cranford steps instead use a short length of pipe for leverage to twist them into the tree. To be blunt if your presetting trees than paying for cranford steps is crazy you should be using grade 8 bolts. The last time I bought grade 8 bolts in bulk they were around 80 cents apiece.

10-4. If I need steps I’ll grab some bolts

Fr a starter hole for crew in steps I always used a screw in bow hook. Makes screwing in a tree step super easy.

I primarily use Ameristep screw in tree steps. I use the step up ones for climbing and the Grizzly for my ring of steps. I probably have over 300 and use the Ultimate Tree Step tool and have no problem installing both types. I do many presets before the season.
