Has anyone ever removed or thought about removing the canvas seat from the sit drag so it would only be the straps that you sat or leaned in?

That would defeat the purpose of it. On any saddle, the seat portion or the canvas spreads the pressure across a greater area. Without something in there you are going to have 2 pieces of webbing as your only 2 points of contact which will create pressure points.
Even in something like the anderson tree sling which is just webbing, it has 4 pieces of webbing across with vertical pieces of webbing to spread the pressure out.

Oh ok...well the second part of the Anderson sling would have been my second question about intersecting strips
