Differences between Sterling Oplux 8mm and Sterling HTP 9mm

How much smaller/lighter? I'm thinking of making the switch.
It's about 1/3 lighter. Knots once you get them set are much more compact. Overall package depends on stuffing style (htp is much stiffer, so if you want a tight package you need to stuff it a tad more.

less than half the size...I have 75' of predator rope 11.4mm and it takes up a good amount of space in my pop-up 28. The HTP 9mm is considerably smaller...but using the powercord in a friction hitch is crazy hard. I had to go to an 8mm friction hitch in order to rappel down...but for some reason it was able to do it safely.

You might also consider looking at Samson Static Kernmantle 9mm rope; http://www.wesspur.com/rope/samson-static-kernmantle-rope.html

It weighs quite a bit less than HTP 9mm, and is less bulky.

Edit: Just weighed out each rope. I have 49'of HTP 9mm from a "short" I ordered, and 45' of Static Kernmantle 9mm from Wesspur. They come out to .94 ounces and .69 ounces per foot, respectively.

Digging the double entendre, I hope it was intentional

Just get some regular 7mm cord. Works great on htp.

That's odd - by spec they should weigh the same. Were you comparing 9mm htp?

That's what the rope I received from Sterling was labeled as. I know the specs disagree with my findings, but the Samson rope weighs less on my kitchen scale, feels heavier in the hand, and is more bulky.

You had me doubting myself a bit, so I double checked my invoices and the labels that came with the ropes... Both 9mm and type as previously stated.

Actual rope diameter of the Samson, measured with calipers is .400", while the Sterling is .450". This accounts for the difference in bulk.

.450 is 11.5mm and .4 is 11mm. Are you sure that you have 9mm htp and not e.g. mislabeled 3/8 (10mm) htp (or even 7/16?)? The weight you report is between 3/8 and 7/16 htp. I think there's a strong chance you have mislabeled rope.

I suppose it's possible, although very unlikely that both Sterling and Wesspur sent me mislabeled ropes.

.450" x 25.4 = 11.43mm __________ .4" x 25.4 = 10.16mm
Measuring rope can be difficult since it is flexible and can compress and expand and become elliptical in cross section. I am not sure how the industry does it but there must be variations. When I measured some rope I encountered these problems and said, Oh well, just the way it is.
