Ditch the Ropeman

PVC T joint tender. Working like a charm so far!
Thx for all the ideas!

Just curious, why do some of the big name saddle makers promote the use of the ropeman1 when it is not rated nor manufactured for how we use them for “tethers” as saddle hunters? Can they inherit liability from someone getting hurt after ordering it from their website?

A. It is rated
B. It's a climbing ascender, Tethrd discussed its use with Wild Country (the manufacturer) and they approved the use in saddle hunting scenarios.
C. I have yet to hear of one failing
D. If your Chevy explodes on the highway, is the dealership at fault or the manufacturer? That answers your liability question.

Ok great. So now it is safe to use on a tether without a chance of it destroying the rope during a fall? Best news I have heard all day.

It's safe when used as approved. And that means in "Ascender-like" situations - i.e. not introducing slack in the line, not exceeding 4KN load, etc. It's not designed to take a fall.

You should never "fall" more than a few inches in a saddle when used properly, so the force should be well under the rating.

So I climbed today with my new ropemanless set up. I really like it.

Oplux, Beal jammy, mini figure 8 for a tender. Worked great. Easy to adjust. Much lighter than my HSS treestrap ropeman setup.

I was worried about the ease of adjustment without the ropeman, but I’ve officially ditched it.

I had the same results with the jammy/OpLux/mini figure 8. Now if the mini figure 8 didn’t smell like a jar if pennies I’d be totally happy!

Oh ya, I was thinking for one stick method and lwhc method. I ditched the ropemans and use 8mm and beal jammy with mini 8. I just have seen a lot of the you tube influencers hanging from rooemans1 and was wondering if they know anything about potential dangers of using one as a fall arrester or just saw the saddle companies promoting them and hust bought them blindly.

Went out and tested the Oplux, jammy, mini 8 combo tonight as well as my mini 8s just came in and I’m very happy as well. Worked up to be very clean setup and worked very well for me tending. I got two identical ropes but I’m leaning to no tender on my tether as less stuff to make noise. It’s money on the LB thus far tho.

Lots of guys in this hobby misuse rock climbing gear and build sketchy safety systems. I’ll stick with the tried and true guidelines that have kept big wall climbers off the deck for decades. John Long’s “Climbing Anchors” is worth a read for anyone hanging from ropes. Deals with lots of protection we never use in trees but many of the general principles are great to know.

If we don't know anything else to use besides a ropeman 1 what other options are there out there can you post something so we could see or we can purchase it?

Prusik or other friction hitch. Kong duck.

CT Roll n Lock is what I've been using as well as the ropeman2 mostly. I have the ropeman1 but because I use 8mm oplux the ropeman1 specs don't recommend using it for rope that small. Although as far as I can tell it bites just as well as the ropeman2 does.

Be mindful of slack with the ropeman 2. Dynamic loading can shred the sheath of your tether. Same principle as a tibloc... just more expensive with moving parts ;)

Also, sounds like you already know but definitely stick with the manufacturer recommended size rope for any ascender or assisted braking device. What works great when dry, might not when wet. Direction of pull makes a difference too.

Edit: I personally use an autoblock or bachmann to connect to the tether and tie in directly to the tether lower down to back it up.

As far as I can tell while using a saddle there isnt a single reason why I'd ever have slack in my system. Not that I've got much experience but I cant think of any time where I would let out more than an inch or two of slack and even then I'm not jumping off my platform right after. I can understand why people might prefer to use a mostly rope system but I prefer the convenience of my mechanical ascenders. Even if it's just perceived convenience.

The appropriate non mechanical industry standard for hanging from a rope is some form of friction hitch. i.e. Prusik, distel, etc. The important thing here is to use an appropriate sized and rated rope for your hitch (NOT a Home Depot special).
