DIY Climbing Sticks - Spacing Idea

Hi all,

Firs time poster here. I am currently making up some 24" sticks similar to LW using 1" x 1" aluminum tubing and double steps and tree brackets from doublesteps.com. I plan on doing 24" sticks with about a 22" step spacing, and then running a single aider off the bottom (movable) to get me 66" of steps with each stick. This will let me go about 17' with 3 sticks or 22' with 4. My concern was in colder weather will the 22" step be doable once you have overalls on or thick hunting clothing. Anybody have this problem?

I think I am going to put all my heavy layers on and go strap it to a tree and see how the 22" works with all that gear on and insulated hunting bolts. If it doesn't work out well, for hardly any weight I can drill a hole halfway up the climbing stick and weld a SS nut over the hole, then if the step is too large you can simply pull an 8" bolt out of your pocket and screw it in to get yourself a 10" step.

So if that is the case and i do want more steps, i can utilize the same sticks by simply adding a bolt to each stick and changing to a 2 step aider instead of a single. That would get you approximately 11" stick spacing instead of 22" for virtually no added weight other than a bolt and nut which weighs far less than jumping up to a full size stick or adding an entirely new step in between there. Anybody every tried this/done this/seen this?

Last season I used muddy pros, modified heliums (cut to 24") and beast sticks. Then made me some DIY 20" sticks with DanO's parts. Much prefer the 20" stick over the 24". I didn't have any problem with the 22" step and I assume you won't either. I just found the 20" pack so much better. Order a couple extra tubes and cut some to 20" and try it. Its the shipping from online metals that a killer not the actual cost of the product.

You should find a local machine shop/metal supplier, i buy from some guys we deal with at work and i just picked up 4 24" sticks and it only cost me $25 out the door cut and all. I know its expensive to ship metal bought online!
