Hey all, I've decided to try my hand at a DIY saddle this year and am thinking I would like it to be mesh with a pleat. I've read through a lot of threads on here and searched but haven't seen any clear tips/instructions on how to do a pleat. It doesn't seem difficult and I'm sure I am nuking this but thought I would ask to see if anybody had any tips on pleat construction. TIA

What I did is I took my pattern for a phantom clone and cut in half, then cut two pieces 2.5” wide and one piece 5” wide by however long your saddle is this makes up the pleat. Hopefully that makes sense.

Video doesn’t go over how I sewed but I thin you can get a good idea of how I did it.

I guess I'm confused. Are the pleated saddles not just a big box pleat? Why in the world would you cut different pieces to make them?

You don’t have to cut them to make the pleat, I did with mine because I was using 1/4” spacer mesh with it, wanted to keep the thickness of the assemblies as thin as possible.

So instead of cutting individual pieces just add that width to the saddle. So the width on my phantom clone is eight inches on the side just add ten more inches to and the fold them and sew them.

Custom Gear Modifications has a video on their channel showing how he did it.

Awesome Build on that saddle! And thanks, that does help out. I wont be using the spacer mesh so hopefully I wont run into binding attachment issues regarding the thickness of material.

Thanks, I appreciate it glad I could help. I wanted to try it and that’s all I could find at the time but I ended up finding some thinner stuff from Rockywoods that I’m using for what I call a lite version of the saddle and building out just mil spec mesh.
Good luck with your saddle build.
