Diy stick

I think the "looks like **#$@%" comment was hilarious but also not constructive or nice. I wouldn't bother responding to those comments!

I think the DIY is always the funnest way to go and you'll have more pride in your gear at the end of it plus you'll pick up and refine new skills. I wish I had a welding machine to practice making gear. Keep up the work and you should end up with some cool stuff that meets your needs. This community is really rich in DIY history so don't let any poor comments dissuade you. I think you'll find most of us here want you to be safe, succeed, and have fun.

If you are planning on 1 sticking with this I would recommend going ahead and welding a flat plate to the top and you'll have a nice compact platform stick. Then come back and weld a plate for your platform stick at an angle and see which you like better. Once you know what you like on what i'll call your "prototype stick" then go clean it up and make a nice finished product.

I am assuming this is steel since its rusted the way it is? I am no welder but I think that once you have a design down (plus the helpful pointers you've got here) go back and clean up all that surface rust off all the pieces then weld it up. Once its welded hit it with some rustoleum to seal it up.

As far as tree attachment for one sticking the cam cleat does come high praised. I haven't tried the DIY ones but really liked the old muddy pro ones. If you wanted to keep the priced low I would suggest the DIY button and ropemod. I believe it is the next best thing and what I currently use.
I appreciate the feedback.

I probably should just buy new steel.

Evolution of my diy sticks...minus the angle step like in the other thread. Notice a trend? With a properly constructed carry with u multistep aider stick length really starts to mean nothing....I haven't used my sticks half of last season and none this season...u can use just a rope with a loop on 1 end and a timber hitch as an anchor point to hook an aider up to if u wanna go ultralite

I thought of just making a platform with an aider and skipping the stick all together however i figured a little extra on the standoff and i could use it like a mini platform on top of the stick.
Its just going to have to be a trail and error for what works.

They look good if the welds are strong enough. Paint will hide the " looks like ****." Most other sticks look like **** before paint. Besides, it keeps the rust off your hands.

I made the exact same design! My first attempt at making sticks too. Mine are about 20”. I use two sticks and a platform and I can get my platform to at least 15ft, more if there’s a branch or two I can use. Definitely put yours through the wringer, see how you like it. I made buttons out of 1/4” bolts with washers welded to the head. I attach with 6mm cord, loop on one end and hitch around the button. I’m like you I enjoy making my own gear and would rather not spend the money. That’s the only pic I have, they weren’t quite finished yet 6E4308BF-2033-4194-9314-55A7EF57C481.jpeg
