Is it cost effective to try and build these yourselves or should I just pony up and buy them from Tethyrd or some other company. I’m starting to collect gear to saddle hunt but it ain’t cheap when all added up. I used to hunt private land with built in stands but lost access. Looking to get some wild edge steps and a aider setup as well

It can be cost effective to make your own! They aren’t hard to make. 11-13’ of rope. Tie a figure 8 on one end and a scaffold not on the other end. 4’ of accessory cord to make a friction hitch and you’re set to go. two and you have what your need.

Lineman’s and Tether Can be had for ~$30!! Plus 2 carabiners makes it $50. Thats versus tethrds for $54 and $59

$50 diy < ~ $115

For reference here is a price on one rope (no hitch cord)1223AFBB-AB7A-4397-A794-8394BFFC5867.png

They're priced ok, but definately cheaper options that i prefer. 25 ft of 9mm htp, 10 ft of 7mm cord, couple of carabiners is 60 bucks at doublesteps.com and preferred (by me at least, although I'm moving to oplux - and a high-end compac config with oplux/trc and nicer biners still ends up cheaper. You really need to like big spliced ropes to like the tethrd ones.

So would you argue in favor of just getting the oplux (also on that site) and the recommended Beal Jammy for prusiks? I found some good carabiners on sale at Backcountry.com that seem to be well reviewed. I've never been considered climber, mainly bc gravity works so well on me, so I don't know anything.

Some of it comes down to what you prefer. It's not just good/better/best. For example I'd not run the jammy as I prefer distel hitches, and it's not even a 100% guarantee that I won't go back to the htp for some cases.
