Do any deer survive 6’ of snow (thinking Buffalo NY)

Luckily we are going to have significant warm ups so the depth will recede. It will for sure have an impact but we had a huge snow event here in 2014 where terms like “ Snowvember” and “wall of snow” were seemingly first heard or coined. Never heard of any issues with deer… we have a lot of them.

I would think they would head to thermal cover like cedar thickets and the like. I've heard the term "yarding" where a lot of deer will go to the same place voluntarily.

Wind can be both a curse and a saving Grace. You would be surprised how much wind will blow snow in certain areas called drifting and clear land completely devoid of snow in other areas. Hopefully the deer will find and utilize these natural occurrences effectively. Thermal cover is important but so is the varied terrain we have here.

I also suppose the fat reserves ticker starts ticking and you hope to get a break before the reserves are gone, like health bars in a video game.

The Snow seemed also very localized also, areas 5 miles away got feet less snow. Deer have no problem traveling miles to an area with significantly less snow.

The snow was so heavy the wind didn't move it as much as usual.

I saw a few deer on Saturday while walking down the street to help someone shovel. They were hanging in lowland cedar/pine thicket, like @Flint said.

A bit of a conundrum around creek bottoms, the huge rain we had just before the snowstorm left them pretty washed up and wetted out. Deer were still working through them but spending more time in high spots. Been a tough couple of weeks for our deer with mother nature.

Still haven't been in the woods this gun season. Hopefully a lucky Thanksgiving.
