Does with fawns?

Ditto on shoot what you want. I've shot lots of does with fawns. And I missed a fawn just the other day. I like killing deer for the meat and for the experience. I'm at the stage where killing something is more fun than killing nothing, so let it fly!

On another note, I had one fawn stand about 10 yards from me and watch me load its mom onto my ATV. That almost changed my mind. Almost...

I have also had to almost kick the fawns out of the way to recover mama. I would have shot them too but at the time Maine was a one and done state.

Especially when I am frying up some back straps out on the lake while I am ice fishing in March. Better than hot dogs:grinning:

The best meal I've ever had was on the ice! My buddy got a button buck so he brought some steaks, French bread and a bottle of wine. We cooked the steaks on a Colman stove put them on the bread and OMG we were in heaven. That was close to 40 years ago! LOL

Everything tastes better out on the ice! I can't explain it but its true.

My kids are 3 and 5. They don't want me to shoot any baby deer but are looking forward to me bringing home a "momma deer or a daddy deer". As long as it doesn't have spots, and it's close enough to make me feel like I can take a good shot, I'm shooting, regardless of if there's another one walking in front or behind it. Hasn't translated to a successful bow harvest for me yet, but I'm gonna keep trying until I can't say that anymore, and beyond.

Don't worry. Believe me, we all can't wait for your first either cause I guarantee every one else on here that has a first will be taken back to there first and that my friend is what I call a magic memory:hearteyes: Hmm. Maybe that would be a great thread.

The first hunt I was on that I first deer in range it was a doe with 2 little 1s. I had a moment...I don't really need the meat, are they old enough to survive, I didn't know and I let them walk.....I have since taken that weakness and ripped it out and set it on fire..... according to the laws of my state, during archery season, if it doesn't have spots I'm going to kill it.

My daughters 3 and my sons are 5 and 1. I took the 3 and 5 year old to a box blind this year for a hour or so mid day, we climbed up and twenty minutes later 2/3 yearlings came in. They were so excited watching them I couldn’t justify pulling the trigger. Few minutes later they went the way they came from and they both looked at me and said dad, you missed an opportunity get off your phone. When all I was doing was videoing them watching the deer out the window of the blind haha. Kids are full of it

I've said this in another thread...
My problem has always been in that situation is which one should I shoot first so the other doesn't run away and stays in bow range and will give me enough time to nock another arrow?

I live by the phrase "hunt your hunt", I dont care about what others do, or how others think I should hunt. I do me, I'd shoot the fawn in a second, if that's the opportunity I had. I cant say that I have shot many young ones though, I also am looking for net gains, I dont "need" the meat but I want the meat and the older ones, now I'm speaking in general terms here, but the older ones usually have more of it... the majority of my deer get turned into some type of ground be it sausage burger or straight ground, my wife and kids dont like deer steaks so almost all of my whole meat goes to jerky. More meat more for me! I shoot what I want as long as I have tags!

I’ve never doubled with a bow. However, rifle I shoot the big one first. Small one usually takes a few leaps and stops and looks back. Than that one get a dirt nap too :)

Couple of seasons ago my son shot the trailing fawn because momma got behind the hillside before he could get on her. A few minutes go by after the shot and we didn't see her come out on the other side of the hill so my son slowly walked to where he could see past the hill and there was momma standing there looking back at her fawn. He put a 20 gauge slug thru her too without even thinking if maybe I wanted to shoot her, lol!

Ha! I was with my buddy this year and we were shootin the **** on a hillside and a 5 point amd a button back down down the side hill. I slowly grabbed my gun and dumped the 5 then the button buck stoped and stood so I dumped him. My bud looked at me and goes jee thanks. I didn’t wanna fill a tag. Oops. Shoulda been quicker on the trigger ;)

Wow! You've got a killer on your hands there. I like it :tearsofjoy:

Stone cold killer at that.
Breaks my heart he has no interest in bowhunting but give him the green light when he's holding a firearm and he'll limit out.
He's got his heart set on the military right after high school. He loves our country and wants to hunt the ultimate game.

That boy is in touch with his better self. The little thing in a brain that makes a cat chase a laser and a dog chase a tennis ball. He'll stick with it

The season starts at a certain date for a reason doesn't matter what state. After x amount of days after a fawn is born its capable of living and surviving on own it's own. So if a doe with fawns come by yes I'm taking my shot at the doe. Number of years ago opening weekend of bow season I harvested a doe with 2 fawns. Fast forward 3 months to rifle season in the same treestand I saw the 2 fawns together yet and looked healthy and nothing wrong with them

This thread illustrates how much variation in state circumstances and regulations exists.

.... bow season they both walk.
There goes my only reasonable chance at securing venison for the year.

Rifle season their both dead. Mom first then young one if it’s not smart enough to flee he area.
I am now getting cited for illegally taking antlerless deer out of season.
