Ok guys, I decided to make some changes to the hand drill. It works great, but it's just too sloppy for my liking. So I picked up a piece of 3/4" 6063 channel from metals depot. It' not the ideal scenario, I'd rather 6061, but this fit what I was trying to do dimensionally (had an 1/8" wall).

If someone finds 6061 channel in these dimensions (3/4 X 3/4 X 1/8 6063-T52 Aluminum Channel (Sharp Corner) please share with us.

Edit - https://www.amazon.com/Web-48-6061-...pID=31KQkeGqzLL&preST=_SX342_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

I bought one - he's got 9 left in stock. If this material works, I'll cut myself 3-4 to keep and then i'll have a handful to sell for a few bucks and shipping - shoot me a PM if you don't want to bite off the whole chunk.

I took a flapper wheel to create two flats on the welded stop on the drill bit, the rotating sleeve, and the fixed sleeve the bolt goes through. I just held it with a pair of needle nose vise grips and ran over the wheel until it fit - a bench grinder, belt sander, or any flat fixed sanding device will make smoother work of this. The steel is soft and grinds quickly and easily.

I then drilled two holes and bolted the drill bit in, and then drilled a hole for the handle. Everything turns so much smoother now with flat surfaces at the joints.

I have a concern with the aluminum opening up at the bolt hole since it's 6063. If I can find shoulder bushings, I may drill out and add those. Only thing it needs now is round and sand all the edges, and a stealth strip treatment.

I currently have it with a friction fit even without the stealth strips. I suspect I will have to sand a little at a time until it slides in and stays in place how I want. One idea I had was to double layer the stealth strip on the lip of the channel so it "clicks" down into the channel for storage. Will give it a go. Weight is probably less than half an ounce difference, but will weigh this evening to confirm.

Do you think you'll be able to get more leverage with this constitution making it easier to drill hard trees?

It’s the same length as the original. I don’t notice a need for more leverage, but have only drilled 50-60 holes.

Your stroke is significantly more efficient though with flat surfaces for the bolts to go through. Huge upgrade there in my opinion. I would imagine you could go longer with the arm, but don’t see the need. I tried to go fast, but not sloppy, and it took 20 seconds to drill a hole.

Came up with perfect place to keep the system for climbing.

Thanks @DaveT1963 for the heads up on the alps pouch. I cut the foam pad off the back for reduced bulk since there’s no optics or electronics inside(if you’re using these for anything besides fragile stuff, do this and thank me).

Found some tool drawer foam, and punched holes in it with some tubing I had laying around. Doubled the foam so it’s 1” thick or so. Made it a little bigger than the opening of the pouch so I had work it down in there tight.

It works perfect- you don’t utilize all the space in the pouch, but the rods or bolts don’t touch each other, so the noise reduction is worth it.

Nice and quiet and has straps to clip to belt or shoulder strap or chest strap.

I like this a lot! I am just getting into the bolt scene and am planning on making my own hand drill. Yours looks slick.

The channel works perfect. I picked up a few different bits trying to match the performance of the EZkut...no dice yet. But I will find it.

There are definitely cheaper options, but these are quiet quiet, and it's padded for binos or phone or what not as a dual use. @DaveT1963 deserves the credit on this. I bought four, sold two because I didn't like them but wanted to hang on to a couple just in case. Glad I did.

There's a pad on the back that is good for protection if you have electronics in it. But you can cut it off for this and reduce a lot of bulk.

Was there Velcro on the pouch that you removed ?

Looks good man. Thanks. So you strap that to your sternum strap ? I’m guessing you lift the lid each time you go for a bolt or is there a way to keep that open.
