Finding sheds in the deep south

Used to be a forester in GA. Cruised Timber 5 days a week. In one year I picked up almost 80 sheds between GA, AL, SC, and north FL. The guys I worked with were lucky to find 3 or 4 a year. I looked for them everywhere I went. Would purposefully walk through thick areas instead of going around trying to find them. I checked every single food plot I came across. If I was walking up a drain I would walk the opposite side of it on the way out to see more ground. Most of the sheds I found came out of middle ga /Al. When you get further south into the flat woods it gets thick and hard to see them. I averaged 5-6 miles a day walking to find 80 total. On my personal deer lease I look everytime I go in the woods and have found 2 or 3 in the 10 years I have hunted it. Deer density plays a big role obviously. I can remember places I cruised that I saw tons of sign and tons of deer and picked up noticeably more sheds on those.

There are plenty of bucks in the South The deal is that they hold their horns really late More than common for deer to have horns in April Guys are not out walking and looking in thick crap with it 100 degrees That is why the ones that are found are found in open areas I have a pile of sheds from over the years and most were found either turkey hunting or bushhogging and planting plots

This has been my experience as well. My primary area has had them hold on at least into March. By the time I'm back out for turkey or anything else, it's already growing so fast that it's hard to find much. I think in 6 years, I've found 1 shed total, and it was a spike & already gnawed on by squirrels.
