Today was the first day I could get out for Archery season. I wasn't expecting much as it's nowhere near rut yet, but weather was going to be nice and I figured at the very least I'd get some more in the field practice.
I setup and noticed some unanticipated small trees blocking my anticipated shooting direction. Begrudgingly I climbed down to cut the trees (I'm on private ground) and climb back up. At this point I've made too much noise and put my scent all over the place so I don't have high hopes.
I had only been setup maybe 10 minutes, heard something running, reached for my bow and didn't even get it off the hook when a nice eight pointer stopped in my newly cut shooting lane looking up at me. I froze, watched him out of the corner of my eye for 20 seconds or so and watched him trot off.
Guess I'm getting old. This arrow slinger is too slow on the draw.
Of course it was also the only deer I saw all day, so plenty of time to ruminate over it.
Oh well, hopefully I'll do better next time. I did drill grabbing my bow and hooking on the release to console myself.
