First Saddle Kill?

So with all the “First Sit/First Saddle Kills” on on the Facebook page, I thought I’d share my first saddle kill story...

After joining this group in 2017 and spending way too much time on this website, I started out with a Kestrel and then graduated to a Mantis.

Both of these saddles I personally blame for my 2 year drought of not shooting a deer (or that’s what I say to my boys who are not happy about not having venison in the freezer)!

So I sold those, grabbed a Phantom this off-season, and have been covered in deer ever since.

Here’s my setup after the shot:

And here’s the “game changer/difference maker” that I haven’t heard of yet...

So I took this picture as I was starting to remove layers to begin the tracking job. I was hot after running at least 200 yards chasing this buck down.

I was walking in late looking for a tree to climb and saw a buck quartering away to my left, probably 80 plus yards away in front if me. I knocked an arrow and started closing distance quickly (and quietly thanks to the well worn deer trail I was on).

The buck was heading around the right side of a small knoll that was off to my left side, so instead of chasing him directly from behind, I pulled a left hook around the knoll.

As I came around the knoll, I saw the buck skirting a swamp to his right and he was still quartering to my left (probably another 50 yards ahead of me.

I continued to sprint through the wet leaves down the side of the knoll and closed right in to ~25 yards. The buck was crossing the trail I was on and turned and looked at me.

I took a few more steps and stopped with 2 small sapling pines on either side of me. My head was visible to him and he turned and started walking directly at me.

As he closed the distance to 15 yards, I drew and released aiming at the base of his neck.

I found him about 100 yards away and I couldn’t have been happier.

And to top it all off, after finding him, I threw a pair of pants over him and went back and grabbed my boys.

I took them back and had them follow the blood trail.

They helped me dressed him out and then the part I enjoyed the best, they helped drag him out too.

So long story short, it was strapped to my ass as I was hauling ass... so does this count as saddle kill?

I could care less, we’re eatin good again!!

But why do you blame the Kestrel and Mantis?
I was just joking around! LOL

I had a super efficient system with my LW Assault Hand climber for years and years. And it had been such a long time since I didn't have a deer in the freezer so it was an ill-timed kick in the nuts making the switch.

A week after this guy, I shot another one from hunting height in the saddle, so the curse is definitely broken!
