First time 1-sticking

Here is a hand ascender video
Maybe I'm overthinking this, too. Could I just continue to climb up with a Madrock, even though the ultimate tether point was much farther above me? Like, theoretically, if I fell, I'd definitely swing much more than I would with the tether just above my head, but it should be safe, right?

Yeah you can climb with your Maddock and take up slack. As long as your not on a crooked tree you shouldn't swing. Just wear your linemans and you'll still be attached to the tree

Excellent. I'll have to add that to my practice routine throughout the summer. I'd rather have a little experience before it's dark and cold and I'm realizing I've made a mistake and have to go back up. Thanks.

SRT is easier, but by the time I set it up I can just one stick back up, which is super easy at that point because your rope is already in the tree so you don’t have to be constantly moving it up. Also easy to keep all the slack out, so it couldn’t be safer. Another good reason never to drop your stick out of the tree, because generally about 5 ft down you are going to realize your mistake and you can just one stick back up from where you are. Having your stick also gives you options if something happens. I run my arm into my stick pull loop and let it hang at my elbow as I rappel down so I always have it if I need it.

Always, always, always attach your pulldown rope before descending. Ask me how many times I've had to climb back up the tree instead of going home...

How many times have you had to climb back up the tree instead of going home?

Do less and slow down, and you'll learn faster. You jumped right into a new climbing method, in the woods, on a leaning tree, when it's wet. Sounds like a recipe for injury. Sorry this doesn't answer your actual question.

I've heard the climb of shame referred to in one sticking. My question is this. Let's say you get to the bottom. Your rappel rope/tether is still attached up top, and you didn't attach your pulldown rope. Do you make the climb of shame using just your linemen's belt?
If I forget to hook my pull down rope up to my rappel line. Then I’m using my Madrock to climb back up. No need for using the linemen’s belt. I’m also new to saddle hunting and one sticking. But I’m getting into a routine on how I do things so I don’t forget the smallest of detail. I’m not saying I’m not going to make a mistake. I just want to make a life altering or fatal mistake.

This is exactly where I am. I just bought 2 full climbing and saddle set ups for my son and I. The final pieces (Madrocks) will be here on Friday. We have a lot of practice coming up in our future. Practice is definitely not something I'm taking lightly. I don't think I will have a problem trusting the gear. It will take longer for me to trust myself that I have set up the gear properly.

I really did not have a question. Just wanted to shout out EWO. Yes I did jump right in but I have a good but climbing experience so I am comfortable with the gear and ropes. No real injury risk.

Twice so far. Second time I realized what I had done as I was dropping my 1-stick to the ground.... trimming a branch over my garage, thankfully, not during the season. So I was already home, but got to climb up again. I will say that ascending a line that's already set is a lot easier than 1-sticking and trying to advance your tether and all that.
