Will do. I’ve never been out there. Excited to go, but unsure what exactly to expect. Any advice is appreciated.
Best tips I can give you are as followed. Take a boat that is light enough that you can use some heavy wall PVC and roll it onto the shore. Every year out there many many center console boats sink because the tide drops out, they are beached on a sandbar and it gets extremely choppy as the tide comes back in which swamps the boats when left in the inlet….
Familiarize yourself with the topical maps. The terrain is ALL sand soil, with 4 large swamps and 3 big lakes on the opposite end from the boat ramp. It’s mostly pine trees and small small scrub oaks (due to poor soil conditions). There are a couple sand dunes and 2 good roads that run west to east on the island. They have a large section to the north center of the island set aside for birds and the red wolf they introduced. You cannot hunt that area.
I’ve only been to the island for the whitetail but I did bump a sambar cow last time I was there. Sambar are actually Asian Elk and they are used to eating rice patty fields and flooded vegetation in Asia. They mimic this on St Vincent by staying in the large swamps and lakes, and eating the underwater vegetation out of them. They tend to stay closer to the coastal areas and have pushed the whitetail more inland of the island.
Finally they have a no stalk hunting rule for the AM so you should show up on Wednesday and scout, because you have to be at your blind, stand, or spot by legal shooting hour and cannot leave it until 9am. They usually issue cow tags at random to about 50% of the hunters when you check in, you’ll know if you get one or not. Sorry it’s not much but hope It helps you have an idea of what to expect.
