Full Body Harness???

Came here to research some simple ways of climbing and now I'm trying to put together a simple saddle setup. I want to to get a feel before investing. I'm going to do a simple fleece sling to start. I'm wondering how I can make a full body harness (x-1 bow-hunter) work instead of buying a rock climbing harness. The concern I have is there is not a belay loop on the full body harness to connect a tether. It does have lineman's loops. My other concern is finding a RC harness that fits because I'm a big guy. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

Do not take this as safety advice whatsoever. I would just get a saddle.

But that said, if you use climbing rated rope or webbing to tie a bridge between the lineman loops, you would have a sort of bridge you could clip in. It should distribute weight to the back of your legs and butt. If much weight distributes along your waist or lower back that could be bad.

Have you looked around for a rock climbing harness yet and not been able to find one? I just did some searching for size charts and it looks like BD goes up to 44" waist. There seems to be an issue in the rock climbing industry on standardization of the larger harness sizes.

If you still can't find something that works for you, you could tie one with rope or webbing, obviously that is less than ideal but it would work.

I just bought a rock climbing harness from REI for $43. I have never hunted out of a saddle before, but figured if I fall, I didn't want my tether up around my head/neck with the HSS harness I have. I think REI had another saddle for $35 or something like that. Check it out.

Just use the linesman loops and hook it in the tether with your fleece saddle. Pull it tight so some (very little) weight is put on the lineman loops. Do not take your linesman off from around the tree until you hook the second lineman into the tether.
Easy

My safety is my responsibility. Eventually I may get a saddle, but lead times are long, they aren't cheap, and I'm not certain about fit yet. I also wanted to get an idea of movement in a saddle. Will certainly start on ground.

My amsteel and climbing rope are coming in next few days and I will try a loop between linemans loops and see how it goes. Thanks for your input. Really appreciated.

@donnieballgame I'm looking at the https://mistymountain.com/shop/adventure/adventure-harnesses/gym-dandy-harness/ I'm more like 46-48. Good info. Thanks!!!

@ImThere When you say "Just use the linesman loops and hook it in the tether with your fleece saddle. Pull it.... " What is "IT"? Sorry I'm a new and slow to understand this stuff. I'm also very visual and hands on.

I’m sorry. I should have been more clear.
Use a second “lineman” rope as a bridge connected to your lineman loops. Put the second lineman in the tether carabiner pull the tag end until the linesman loops have some (very little) weight on them. Where your not “totally” relying on the fleece but the lineman will catch you if the fleece fails.
Once you have the second lineman (bridge) in the carabiner and tight you can remove the first linesman rope. I hope that makes more sense

Thank you for the clarification @ImThere. I have a better understand what you are suggesting. Might have more questions when I put it together.

whether you stick with saddle hunting or not, IMO once you get a rock climbing harness you will never want to put on that full body harness again. It is the cat's meow regardless of the stand that you are hunting in. So again IMO spend the money on getting a RCH and making a tether.

I've heard this before.. if you use it in place of a full body harness where do you hook your tether in??? Do you hook it to that little loop in the back? I have the Ophir slide 3 RCH.

I just bought the Ophir Slide 3 from REI. How do you like it? Are there any issues you have with it?

It hooks to the front and remains there. If I am hunting from my loc on, when I get to the platform I run the tether out amd place the cinch loop behind the seat. You can do a search on saddle hunter for web aider climb and see how I use the RCH in conjunction with my saddle setups.

I have a 44" waist with normal jeans/pants. I used a petzl corax size 2 and had plenty of adjustment left. Even wore it on the outside of my outer pants with no issues. Has adjustments on both sides which allows for a ton of room for layers and what not.

Otherwise misty mountain makes a rock climbing harness for waist sizes a lot bigger than mine. I want to say they go up to 52" waist but I could be wrong.

But yeah once you go to a rock climbing harness, you won't go back to anything else. Until you try a saddle. Then the rock harness collects dust.
