OK guys,
I've been wanting to bring this up for awhile now, And have been talk some with "320thmp" about hunting out of my ghillie suit. First off I'm not a Pro by any means .Just wanted to let like minded hunters know how deadly these bad boys are. So here I go with my two cent on the ghillie suits, First off no matter what you have to watch and check your wind. I'm here to tell you these suit are wicked deadly and are a must for me in my Hunting arsenal. I picked my suit up on Ebay a few years back. I watched the video's on the Mark Anthony bowhunting ghillie suit and browsed around for one. But their was no way I was paying that for a ghillie suit, I ended up snagging mine for 30 bucks with free shipping it is the woodland model. I believe it is a rocky ridge or something like that. It Came with jacket, pants, boonie hat with built in face veil, and also a gun wrap. I didn't care for the boonie hat so I grabbed an old Military watch cap the one with the build in brim I had laying around. Took the gun wrap and sewed piece of it into the hat. So I can either wear face paint or a tight fit face mask. Now these suits are made out of some type of bug mess they are light weight and don't to extremely hot. To add a little kick to the suit I also bought a pack of fall leaves that's are used for wedding decorations. They are made from some silky type cloth and just tied a bunch of them to the outside of the suit in just a random order. If you take this suit in early season archery here in PA and through it on the ground it blends in awesome. If I told you how close I have had deer to me you would think I was BSing you. I've even had deer know something was up see this weird thing leaning up next to the tree and walk right up to me I'm talking danger close. I also treat my suits in Carbon synergy I buy the pure carbon pack mix it in a 5 gallon bucket dunk the suits and let them air dry. I've notices a big difference with the suit treated vs not treated.
Now, when i'm heading into the woods i'm not wearing the suit in I hunt with an Alps pack not sure what modle it is. It's a larger sized butt pack and the back pack part can be tucked into the top of the butt pack. I turn the suit inside out roll it up, put it in the rear pack and start making tracks. If I get myself into a brush pile I don't even bother putting the pants on, I mostly run the jacket and hat. Unless I find a spot where I will be standing and not sitting. I just crouch down lean against a tree and wait. Well after awhile knees started to kill me. I'd just sit through the pain. So That worked out fine until season ended. I swear to you about 4 days after season my knees hurt so bad I thought I was heading to the hospital. So hear is the solution I came up with to render that, I bought a pair of knee savers like baseball and softball catchers wear. They are a foam triangle deal that goes on the back of your cafes. I just rigged them up with some elastic straps to slip them on and off. They attach right to the outside of my pack when I'm covering ground. They take some getting use too but save your knees in the long run. I bought the cheapest ones I could find, Also when using them they set you up higher off the ground. I shoot a 62" recurve and noticed when the shot time came I was always forcing myself up to get my lower limb to clear the ground, Not no More I can shoot without adjusting with them on.
I run two suits I have the woodland for early season and also a desert suit for late season they work great. Now you cant be sitting their moving all around in them. They don't work as a fix all But they are deadly guys, just hunt them smart and you will see what I mean. I never ran into the string material getting caught in the bow string either. That's not to say it wont happen but it hasn't happened to me. I believe on the Mark Anthony suit you can buy them left or right handed shooting. And which ever suit you order has the "ghillie" material removed to prevent hang ups. ok guys that's my input for now about hunting with a ghillie suit. Just wanted to let fellow hunter know these babies work, I cant tell you enough about how deadly they are. Like a said before if I told you how close I've had deer you wouldn't believe me no joke. All right guys lets hear some ideas/stories about using ghillies to hunt the shadows.
