Good .223 round for deer?

Barnes vortex have worked well for my friends that shoot .223

Virginia outlawed using a .223 for deer hunting a handful of years back. It upset a lot of hunters.

Seriously? Crap I need to research that - I was planning an AR hunt for my kids for youth weekend. May need to stay with the 243 - which they are quite proficient with.

A lot of people were, and still are quite upset about it. I know guys who had specialty rifles set up specifically for deer with a .223.

I've killed right around 60 neck shot deer with 65 grain Sierra Game Kings from a .223. An all copper bullet may be better suited for blood trailing, after behind the shoulder hits.

I am a big fan of a Barnes bullet in any caliber. We used to have to kill a lot of does off of a farm that I hunt in Alabama. It was just more than the pair of us could do with a bow so every year at the ed of the year we went on doe patrol which for us was sitting i the truck BS’ing and flopping nannies.LOL A little whistle and a Barnes in the nose from a 223 is a bad dose!

My grandson and I have been using federal fusion 64 grain bullet. He has popped 4 deer behind the shoulder and 30 yd is the farthest one has traveled. Now, all shots were not over 110 yd and that shot was on a 3 year old 8 pt.

Federal fusion makes a 62 grain bonded .223 round called the MSR which is designed for AR15s.

.22 caliber bullets in my view and experience are just too light and come apart so quickly, myself I wouldn't use them on deer. Great for coyotes and woodchucks....
An AR in a .308 caliber, now that's a deer rifle!!
I would agree that a .223 is not a good round for a deer. I know plenty of guys use them and plenty of deer are killed with them every year but I wouldn't carry one in the woods for deer hunting. Not unless I was planning on shooting them in the ear.

If you have a 1/7 or 1/8 twist barrel defiently got for something in the 75 or 77 grain range. Look at IMI 77 gr Razor Core.
