Third hunt of the season got the first tag filled. Had deer in range on my first two hunts but I was looking for Mr. 10pt that had been hanging around a herd of does on my grandfather's property. Saturdays property was one of my you kill everything you can properties so I was looking for anything big enough to eat.
Got into the woods about 1pm because I had decided not to use the preset I had on another tree 200yds away where I killed a good buck many years ago. It's a small property only 13 acres in the hunting area. Walked in and almost immediately walked upto a small doe bedded down in the woods. We stared at each other for a few minutes before she took off. Went about 40 yards away to setup my new spot on a split maple tree . Got my
rope into the tree and got situated by 1:30. About half hour later I hear atvs on the neighboring property then two deer running out. Neighbors shouted to each other about the deer. The deer stopped almost directly below my stand. Second deer spotted me getting my crossbow into position and moved off. First one didn't see me and I let loose the bolt. I was kinda scrunched up trying to take the shot as I was sitting when they showed up and didn't want to risk moving to lean position. She takes off and I see her crash about 70 yards away. As I said she was almost directly below me, the bolt buried halfway into the ground.
Got her dressed and enlisted the landowner to bring his gator down to help bring her out. Was home at 3:15, put the tenderloins in the sous vide cooker then processed the rest of the deer into the primals and hamburger meat in time to eat dinner just after 6pm.
