Same. I have one of those gadgets though. Only time I’ve used it is when it was real hot early season and I used to keep keep the chest cavity more open until I could get to ice or the meat locker. I still go back and forth on the pelvis thing; old habits die hard.
I stopped splitting the pelvis for a couple of reasons. Once, I'm able to tie off the bung and bring everything back through without making a mess. Two, I hang my deer for a week, and splitting the pelvis exposes a lot of meat which dries out unnecessarily. Three, in MN we can't leave the carcass in the woods which usually means dragging it out, it seems a split pelvis is more likely to rotate cut-side-down and fill up with mud. Although, I recently saw a couple of videos where, after making the gambrel slits behind the knees, pass one hoof through the cut on the opposite leg, and do the same with the forelegs, to both keep everything closed (until you can wash and hang) and provide a handle of sorts for lifting the carcass into a vehicle.
