Hawk Helium Hammock

Hawk has had some well-discussed quality control issues with their sticks (especially the new 20" sticks), and they have notoriously bad customer service. Many folks also dislike the whole "Chinese knock-off" thing. That said, I bought a set of their full-length sticks and have had zero issues with them.

Thanks for that, just was curious. I bought the 30" version also, 3 pack for a decent price. I've had 0 issues for the 6-7 trees I've climbed.

Also has anyone considered that Hawk might actually be taking one for the TMA team and making crappy saddle hunting products on purpose (assuming they continue doing what they are doing) so that when they fail, they can say “see there saddle hunting isn’t safe, everybody should go back to buying tree stands”???

Well that's a scary thought :tearsofjoy: I mean in general, saddle hunting you're trusting your carabiners, ropes, and saddle simultaneously with your life, so it is already a heart check. I'm with you though in the potential that the entry level price barrier might be there to demonstrate value over quality spectrum. However, from the documentation, gear, and initial first 3 trees I have tried it on, seems trustworthy in the first couple tries.... But I'm uber-cautious already, keeping the linesmen on while I'm tethered slowly letting off the tension from the LM.

I hope for your sake nothing does. Would hate to hear that.

Thanks for that, I'll balance out the risk and keep close tabs on sew joints, carabiners, and overall saddle composition.

Created a quick GoPro video (ignore the silly "theme song") this weekend on one of my trees. Hope you enjoy, going to pull down my full setup and time myself on a new tree today.

Who else is using the "ring of steps" Silent Approach setup from bullman outdoors? I'm a fan, only issue is they are a hint slippery... Just waiting on shipping confirmation from out on a limb for a ridge runner.

Thanks for watching, I'll get some more content up as there are zero reviews of actual usage of the hammock out there right now.

Also quick question for the experts, give me the lowdown on using an ascender or prusik knot for tether adjustments?

Ibanez? That sounds familiar. I just bought my first guitar. Did you create the sound track on your video?
I like using a 3 turn standard Prusik on my tether. The bad thing is it sometimes gets tight and can not be moved easily. The good thing is it gets tights and does not move too easily.

Haha awesome! I did not make the song no... Here's some PRS guitar tunes (didn't have an ibanez at the time):

Thanks for this, yes that's what I'm experiencing also that the Prusik becomes really tight so I have to hug the tree and adjust. All good though, was curious if anyone was trusting a ropeman v. a prusik knot for tethering. Cheers!

I use the ropeman for both my tether and lineman's rope. It is very secure and extremely simple to manipulate while climbing or in the tree. They are also very light and compact for what they are, at least in their section of the market. Additionally, because of the carabiner hole and how the rope is routed through the ascender they are very quiet, you don't get any of the metal on metal sound that you will get with some of the larger more loosely assembled ascenders you can find for half the price on amazon.

I bought one and find it comfortable in the tree, however the hardware in the leg straps suck and I feel like I can't walk in it. With some mods I feel It could be real nice

I recently purchased this saddle as I wanted to try saddle hunting but can't budget for anything more expensive right now. My first sit was great as far as comfort.goes, but I'm a little concerned about the bridge. It is noticably thinner in the middle. Is this normal? It also seems like the bridge material will wear easily. I think I'm going to back it up with or just replace it with climbing rope.

The bridge is fine. The thin part is where it's only 1 thickness of material. Where it's thicker is where the ends are buried.

So...before I got a saddle I had a lock on. 1 strap attached the stand, 1 harness on my person, and tether and carabineer....hang on stand and saddle are pretty much the same thing as far a trust in gear...

Not entirely, your distribution of weight is in a seated or standing position with the back to the tree. In a saddle, all your weight is distributed to the tether hanging away from the tree. Just saying that yes there is similarities in trust, but the risk is far greater since you are suspended and in the case of an accident, you would freefall into whatever is behind you.

With that, it is very comfortable and I do feel safe as I triple check everything before suspending.

Thanks for the perspective!
