HAWK HELIUM vs BEAST Sticks..... which one, why mod ?

My vote would be for the Helium but I like the Stacked Outdoors sticks the best. They stack together like legos and if you hit them together they sound like rattling antlers and not a loud clang.

Both are only tools. A lot of the decisions we make are due to how we approach hunting and what we get comfortable with. I think I was the first, could be wrong, that modified a stick to 22 inches to increase the step distance. I use hawk heliums because I prefer the stability of standing on two steps. The reason I cut mine down had nothing to do with weight savings. I hunt a ton of thick brush and getting a full length sticks through that was a nightmare in the dark. So I modified what was out there (I always thought 15-16 inch step distance was absurd for most dudes). I actually started making short lone wolfs decades ago because of the same reasons.

But I assure you I could use any stick today on the market and make them work - it is just heliums work well for me and I amused to them the best. I am suing Dan's sticks a lot this season as well. They have some pros and a few minor cons (again just based on how I hunt and what i am comfortable with).

The point, a lot of ideas get generated here and all will work with enough thought and practice. But each of us will have our own experience and what we get comfortable doing. I tried the one sticking and absolutely hated it because IMO I was moving around and unsteady far too much for how tight I get into bedding areas. I want something that is more stable from ground to platform - again my preference. others think its the cat's meow for their approach. Same with Guidos web - I took that thing into the woods a total of ONCE, had no desire to go back to it for many reason. Others love it.

So like i have said before, don't make your mind up based on a few youtube videos or posts. Make a list of what you are seeking in a particular tool, try several of them, then decide which one fits you.

Personally i don't think you would go wrong with either stick - it is just a matter of which you get most comfortable with.

All I do is make a 22" continuous loop that goes through the holes in the step and around the post. So take both tag ends and put them through a step hole on each side and run them around the back. Measure whatever distance you want for the size of the foot loop by measuring from the top of the bottom step to the bottom of the loop. Mark the rope. Do the lock splice and your done

How much rope did you bury on each side when making the continuous loop?

I use an entire 6ft rope so no cutting. Do the lock as close to center as possible and bury the tag ends

I did this exactly and it came out perfectly at 22”. Now, if I only didn’t suck at one sticking so bad.

My sticks weigh 1lb 10oz as they are right now. I used:
API huntin sticks steps
API huntin sticks versa buttons
1/16 wall 6061 aluminum shafts
Dano's ultralight standoffs
Wild Edge rope for the foot loops
Cam straps without the cam buckle(buckleless method)

With sticks, if you want the lightest you gotta DIY. If I wanted to save a few more ounces I would replace the steps with Dano's steps. I could prolly get them down to 1.5 pounds with doublesteps which is crazy light. But these already feel super light and I'm pretty happy with them.

Hey I know this an old thread, but where did you pick up those shafts for these sticks?
