Fight wildland fires in the summer. Tell your family goodbye for 6 months. You can do a years worth of work in 6months. 14-21 days 16hr days in a good year (sorry CA). Then 6 months off starting in mid OCT. Also, I am putting on a wildland chainsaw course soon. Can I use the first photo in the group for my power point?
Best of luck!

I know a guy who left the military and opened a shooting facility. It literally consists of land, a bathroom trailer, a store trailer, shade shelters, and two towers. He has 6 different ranges on the property for different uses. It gets utilized by civilians, police, military units, etc. He said it's the best decision he ever made because the upkeep is so simple and it brings in a ton of cash. He charges by the hour for the average guy but also offers packages to police/military and it's a pretty simple buisness so he's got two guys on the payroll to run it for him. He hunts A LOT more than I do...

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm definitely going to chew on it some. I can't travel, sadly. Wife would be very unhappy, and I probably would be too after the new wore off. I like her and our happy shack on the riverside. But my costs and standards of living are pretty low, so that helps. As does the lack of kids.

I'd ideally like to run my own business, be an independent contractor, or be self employed in some manner. I get bored easily, and I really chafe under authority. Two personal shortcomings that I genuinely try to overcome, but am beginning to wonder if I shouldn't just figure out a way to avoid. My dad and I had a conversation a few years back where he mentioned he chose his career because he also can't stand doing the same thing everyday. Stuck with me. Why fight something if you can make it a non-issue? Is an alcoholic weak because he refuses to eat dinner at a bar every night?

I'm starting to envision owning a few rental properties, maybe writing a few books, and doing a few other things that kinda generate relatively passive income.

I know some CPAs that do tax work the first half of the year then just piece together some odds and ends and quarterly stuff the rest of the year mixed with a crap ton of golf or hunting or whatever you fancy. I think you could line that up to have pretty much all hunting season off if you planned correctly.

Point being, I don't think there are very many [legal] jobs where you can earn enough to support a family on 1,000 hours a year but there are some where you can jam 2,000+ into a part of the year. That's a lifestyle choice you have to make, but I know I don't enjoy hunting enough to sacrificially work 80 hour weeks in May, that's prime fishing season. You name a time of year and I can give you about 15 things I'd rather be doing than working, my passions go beyond hunting quite a bit.

Sure you can get into the passive income type stuff too, I won't say I am an expert on the concepts but I'll say a lot of it is just that...concepts. If you want passive income to work for you full time be prepared to work full time on generating passive income.

I know it's not very millennial of me, but I've never been a big believer in that whole "love your job" thing. My job has fairly minimal headaches, pays me well. Bores me routinely and pisses me off once in awhile. But I show up, do my job, I go home and live my life. I have a family and I have bills to pay. I think in another life I could have lived like a hobo and done way more cool hunting and fishing pursuits, but my family is everything to me. I love to cook, fish, and hunt, and I think if I made any of those my job I would do great at it....and cease to love it pretty quickly.

I have a pretty decent job for hunting in terms of flexing hours to hunt evenings and I don't ever work weekends. The worst part of my career is just the highly sedentary nature. In another life I would pick something a little more active. I would like to someday have a little more vacation than my 3 weeks. I think my goal is to kinda semi retire early and work part time into the sunset. Depends a lot where health care goes the next couple decades, that's the big retirement wildcard for our generation.

From what I’ve seen you have a gift for sales/marketing.
I’m not sure if that’s something you have thought about but I feel you could make a great living at it but I’m not sure how that path would translate to more time for hunting.
If squirrel steps where corvettes you could retire already

Man I’d give you answers but I have none. I wrote a long paragraph but deleted it. Didn’t want to depress everyone.

I feel that feel some days brother. Hope you're doing alright.
We're all there some days...sometimes more than we wish. It always gets better.

I dont love my job by any means, but it fits a need that I have in my life right now for a consistent income.

Two sayings I try my best to live by:
1) I dont live to work, I work to live.
2) My life is better than your vacation.

They both kind of go without explanation...but.... Do what you need to in order to support the hobbies and life you enjoy, but don't let work be your life. Live by a means and in a place that you don't need to leave your "life" to go on vacation. Everything you want to be dong is at the tips of your fingers when you have the time to take advantage of it.

I don’t have a good answer for you. If you do the travel construction/ maintenance jobs your family life will struggle. I work 4 on 4 off 12 hour shifts. I can pull 4 days of vacation and get 12 days off, not as much as you or I would like but still pretty nice.

Firefighter has its pros and cons but 24 hours on and 48 hours with a couple of shifts to take off during hunting season has been nice

Thanks man I'm fine. The post was something along the lines that given my age and responsibilities, I feel I've painted myself into a corner or more accurately a cubicle. Blessed to have a job, but it just drives me nuts. Kind of like the movie Office Space sometimes. If I'm honest, I think I'd just rather not work.

I have been a residential builder all of my adult life, so was my dad and my grandfather and my son will take over the business soon . We like what we do , meet all kinds of clients ,most good people . We always made the time to hunt and fish . Also have some rentals .If I had to do it over again I would not change a thing. Oh and if you like handyman work and don,t mind the hassles ,rental business may be the way to go. My neighbor has over 100 that are paid for . He gets $600 to $800 per month. Do the math???

Well, sales and marketing......???? Start land and home sales on the side. Different most days and weeks......mostly your own boss.....work a little and see if you like it. I'm not sure about what licences would be required or cost. Just a thought.

My fiancee just started a stay at home job with a tech company. She has a BS but it is health related not computer related in anyway. Pay is very good and she has some flexibility in her hours. I dont know how to find such a gig cause she was referred by a friend but it may be worth looking for something similar.

Someone mentioned CPA above. I had a survey of my property done last year and the guy does that on his own. Hes backed up and gives you a helluva deal but says I'll be there in a month. Said he likes how surveying gets him out of the office. Then during tax season hes backed up with that.

Didn't seem to be hurting for money by the looks of things. I've thought about picking up the surveying for some sort of obligation during retirement vs greeting at wal mart or cleaning tables at Bob evans.

Edit: Actually started looking into surveying more for myself, im also in kind of a weird career position, but turns out you need a full blown surveying degree. Guess I didnt give surveyors enough credit....apologies to anyone whos a surveyor

Man you sound a lot like me, I tend to get board easily as well and always wonder what life would be like if I were doing something else. I’m beginning to think whatever the ideal career is for me may not exist. At this point in my life I’m not crazy about the thought of starting a new profession and working for a new “man”. Real estate has really picked my interest as well.

Job 1 allows me to work my schedule as needed. That includes hunting, fishing, but most importantly family.

Job 2, well, I still don’t know how that really happened but it ain’t the same as 1. Pays and with a kid and wife who’s daddy never said no, I usually need the $. But I’d hate it for an everyday have to situation.

That being said. The job itself isn’t near as important as who u work for. I make my own schedule, have great benefits, & honestly talk to my supervisor once every month or two. He doesn’t micromanage and I love it. He does expect me to do my job though and I’m great with that. I say that, as I know several that have the same job as me that don’t have the same atmosphere I do. I hate punching a clock and am not an ant (one who just goes because their suppose too). My “job” works great for me. But I have a boss that allows it. As good as it sounds it still has drawbacks. The actual job for 1 makes me wish I did something else more times than not. So, what’s a man to do? Do what u want, u only get one go at this thing called life so explore it! Working now to possibly get a job 3 that would help in the $ department.

But passive income. That’s a great thought, and hope you can achieve that!
